About The Position

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Chief Operating Officer’s primary purpose is to direct, administer, and coordinate the activities of the Hospital in accordance with the policies and objectives set forth by the CEO and Board of Directors. The Chief Operating Officer is called upon to make recommendations to the CEO in the development of corporate policies and strategic goals that address the hospital’s operations, personnel, financial performance, and overall growth. Maintaining a long‐term, big‐picture view, the Chief Operating Officer has a clear vision for the business and operation of the hospital and anticipates obstacles with contingency plans and generates breakthrough ideas. Builds trust and inspires confidence that University Hospital will successfully meet the inherent challenges of today’s rapidly changing healthcare environment.

Requirements

  • Master’sDegree in Business, Administration, Public Health, or a related health field is REQUIRED.
  • Seven (7) years of senior hospital leadership is preferred with a track record in improving the patient safety and quality.
  • Must be a goal‐oriented leader with a focus on analytics to support decision‐making. Will be a disciplined problem solver, with excellent written and verbal communication skills, who fosters excellent working relationships with an eye to employee engagement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a unionized hospital is preferred as is experience in an Academic Medical Center.

Responsibilities

  • Provides operation oversight for the management of the organization and for the development and implementation of hospital‐wide policies and procedures that promote quality patient care and patient satisfaction.
  • As a member of the senior leadership, is responsible for advising the President and CEO about direction and strategy. Report directly to the President and CEO in both an operation and advisory capacity. Consistent with the CEO’s direction, the COO will be empowered with day‐to‐day decision‐making regarding institutional priorities, achievement of solid financial stability, ensuring compliance with Federal, State and Local regulatory requirements, and efficiency of operations.
  • Directs the preparation of the hospital’s short‐term and long‐range plans and budgets based upon organizational goals and growth objectives.
  • Is the senior executive primarily responsible for administering the clinical services agreement between Rutgers NJ Medical School and University Hospital.
  • Under the leadership of the President and CEO, builds and sustains relationships with a range of constituencies such as community groups, bargaining units, public officials, and other hospital and academic medical center partners.
  • Determines departmental programs toward stated goals and objectives by reviewing analyses of financial, operational, and forecast data.
  • Leads hospital operations toward organizational targets.
  • Systematically appraises and evaluates the hospital’s overall operations and reports results to the CEO. Makes presentations to the Board, Board Committees, and medical staff committees as required.
  • Establishes and ensures execution of corporate operating policies consistent with the CEO’s broad policies and objectives.
  • Reviews hospital activities and operations to ensure compliance with Local, State, and Federal regulations and laws governing business operations, including TJC, state agencies and other governing bodies.
  • Provides support to the CEO in internal and external business matters and pursues active involvement in community activities representing the hospital.
  • Maintains sound working relationships with key University staff in the hospital, New Jersey Medical School, and legal counsel, and with outside public and governmental bodies.
  • Fosters open dialogue and expression of ideas and promotes communication in all directions throughout the organization.
  • Creates an environment that fosters personal investment and excellence and creates opportunities that give employees latitude to develop and achieve.
  • Assigns clear authority and accountability and integrates efforts across units and functions. Monitors results and tackles execution obstacles directly and immediately.
  • Leads, influences, and empowers direct reports while encouraging commitment to a common vision and promoting collaborative teamwork.
