About The Position

MOERJ seeks a highly motivated individual with excellent judgement and communication skills to work with the Commissioner to advance an agenda for equity and racial justice across the city. The Chief of Staff will be responsible for managing a wide array of key relationships on behalf of the Commissioner, both inside and outside of government. This includes cultivating key agency relationships and helping to expand the scope of relationships and engagement with these stakeholders to advance the Commissioner’s vision. Additionally, the Chief of Staff will carry a portfolio of relationships outside of government to support the effective flow of communication to and from the Commissioner with key stakeholders across civil society. As a part of those responsibilities, this individual will play a critical role ensuring that requests for information from both internal and external parties are managed properly, and will be responsible for researching, analyzing and synthesizing data that is presented to the Commissioner. The Chief of Staff will report to the Commissioner. The Chief of Staff will support the Commissioner in the convening and coordination of her senior staff, helping set priorities, manage cross-departmental projects, track the timely completion of relevant projects, and ensure seamless coordination across members of the team. The Chief of Staff will partner with the Commissioner on the strategic utilization of her time including consideration of external invitations and ensuring proper preparation and thorough follow through of key meetings and engagements.

Requirements

  • Do you have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university?
  • Do you have an associate degree from an accredited college or university along with two (2) years of experience with administrative, analytic, coordinative, supervisory or liaison responsibilities?
  • Do you have a four-year high school diploma, or its educational equivalent approved by a state's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization along with four (4) years of experience as described in question "2" above?
  • Do you have a satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to that described in questions "1," "2," and/or "3" above?

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an advisor for the Commissioner, providing thought partnership on agency priorities and the strategies to advance those priorities
  • Serve as the Commissioner’s liaison to other governmental agencies and external partners
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the leadership team to effectively leverage the Commissioner’s time in a manner that crafts and help execute strategies to advance engage the Office’s vision to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Write and edit content for memos and correspondence for stakeholders.
  • Draft and revise speeches and key talking points.
  • Manage and ensure the Commissioner is well prepared for external meetings, events, hearings, and other engagements, including briefing memos, and assist with follow-up.
  • Serve as a liaison for the Office of Equity & Racial Justice.
  • Guide leadership staff on issues involving external stakeholder interests.
  • Provide distinct operational support for public outreach campaigns on planning initiatives, including organizing meetings with internal partners in government, elected officials and relevant community groups.
  • Represent the Commissioner and Office, as needed, at internal and external meetings, including on interagency taskforces and workgroups.
  • Work closely with the Commissioner and Chief Administrative Officer on important personnel, and budget matters, as needed.
