About The Position

Work in the Chemical Laboratory preparing specimens for analysis, performing tests, and providing technical leadership. Develop procedures, maintain and update equipment. Reports to Laboratories Manager. Perform tests and provide technical leadership in the Chemical Laboratory analyzing and characterizing metals, weld deposits, raw materials, coatings, and lubricants. Assist Mechanical and Microscopy Labs to perform testing of weld deposits and report results. Responsible for the safe operation, cleanliness, and maintenance of Chemical Laboratory equipment. Ensure accuracy and integrity of testing procedures, records, and results. Maintain laboratory personnel training records, test methods, and specifications. Support manufacturing and Consumable R&D product development. Responsible for development and maintenance of laboratory procedures. Perform, instruct, and supervise chemical tests. Explain the precision and limitations of test equipment. Compile, interpret, and explain data to process partners. Confirm results with other methods (when necessary) and sign off on chemical test results from others in the laboratory. Evaluate new instruments and test methods and write capital appropriations to update equipment. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Minimum four-year degree required in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, or similar discipline. Specialization in analytic chemical testing of inorganic materials is desirable.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on analytical chemistry lab experience required.
  • Chemical test equipment experience should include Spark OES, ICPs, XRF, Carbon/Sulfur and Moisture Analyzers, and other instruments.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods is required.
  • Highly motivated, quick learner, creative, and quality conscious.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and a proven ability to work independently as well as a part of a team as a technical leader.
  • Excellent record keeping and organizational skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and database software.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Mechanical Testing, Microscopy, and/or NDT would be a plus.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma methodologies is desirable.
  • Experience with a laboratory information management system software would be a plus.
