About The Position

Altom Transport is a family-owned carrier focused on trust, safety, and service, operating across 49 states and Canada. They specialize in the safe transportation of bulk liquid chemicals and petroleum products, with safety being a core principle, starting with driver training. The company is seeking an experienced Chemical Tanker Driver Trainer for a part-time role. This position involves hands-on, real-world training, both in the truck and at customer locations, for new and existing drivers. The trainer will be crucial in ensuring drivers meet Altom’s safety standards, understand proper tanker operations, and represent the company professionally in the field.

Requirements

  • Valid Class A CDL with X Endorsement (Hazmat & Tanker)
  • Strong safety record and clean MVR
  • Deep understanding of: Bulk liquid surge and handling
  • Deep understanding of: Chemical compatibility & safety procedures
  • Deep understanding of: Loading/unloading at plants and terminals
  • Strong communication and coaching ability (this is not just driving—it’s teaching)
  • Ability to evaluate drivers objectively and enforce standards

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of chemical or liquid tanker experience (preferred for trainer role)
  • Prior driver training or mentorship experience strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Train and mentor new CDL drivers on safe tanker operations (chemical & petroleum)
  • Conduct ride-alongs and on-the-road evaluations
  • Instruct proper loading/unloading procedures, including pumps, hoses, and valves
  • Reinforce hazmat handling, spill response, and PPE protocols
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, EPA, and customer-specific requirements
  • Evaluate driver readiness and provide clear pass/fail recommendations
  • Coach drivers on defensive driving, situational awareness, and risk mitigation
  • Assist with refresher training and remediation for current drivers when needed
  • Maintain accurate training documentation and evaluations
  • Communicate closely with Safety and Operations teams
