About The Position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a strategic and operational leader responsible for overseeing all financial functions of the company, including accounting, financial planning and analysis, job cost controls, cash flow management, bonding and banking relationships, risk management, and long-term financial strategy.  The CFO partners closely with the President, executive leadership team, and operations leaders to drive profitable growth, improve margins, ensure financial discipline across projects, and support expansion initiatives such as acquisitions, new branches, and service-line growth. This role requires deep experience in construction or mechanical contracting, including percentage-of-completion accounting, WIP reporting, job costing, and working capital management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in financial leadership roles, preferably including CFO or senior finance executive positions.
  • Strong knowledge of corporate financial law, risk management practices, and financial reporting standards (GAAP or IFRS).
  • Proven experience in strategic financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strategic thinker with hands-on operational execution skills
  • Strong business acumen and financial discipline
  • Ability to communicate financial insights to non-financial leaders
  • High integrity and attention to detail
  • Collaborative leadership style with field and operations teams

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) or Finance.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
  • Experience working in a publicly traded company or a high-growth startup environment.

  • Demonstrated success in leading mergers, acquisitions, or capital raising initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the President/CEO and executive team.
  • Lead long-term financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and scenario modeling.
  • Support growth strategies including geographic expansion, acquisitions, and service diversification.
  • Evaluate capital investments (equipment, facilities, fleet, technology).
  • Oversee accounting operations, including AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Lead WIP (Work-in-Progress) reporting and percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Establish and monitor KPIs for profitability, productivity, cash flow, and working capital.
  • Partner with operations to ensure accurate job costing, forecasting, and margin tracking.
  • Review project budgets, change orders, over/under billings, and closeout processes.
  • Identify margin erosion risks early and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support PMs and branch managers with financial insight and accountability.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital optimization.
  • Oversee billing, collections, retention, and lien waiver processes.
  • Monitor under/over billings, inventory, and payables timing.
  • Ensure adequate liquidity to support growth and seasonal fluctuations.
  • Maintain strong relationships with banks, bonding agents, insurance providers, and auditors.
  • Lead bonding capacity planning and financial presentations.
  • Oversee risk management, insurance programs, and contract financial risk review.
  • Support contract negotiations from a financial and risk perspective.
  • Ensure strong internal controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Lead ERP/accounting system optimization (Sage Intacct, BuildOps).
  • Oversee audits, tax compliance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support IT, data analytics, and financial systems integration.
  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing finance and accounting team.
  • Establish clear accountability, performance standards, and professional development plans.
  • Foster a culture of accuracy, transparency, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and implement financial strategies that support the company’s overall business objectives.
  • Lead the preparation and presentation of accurate financial reports, budgets, and forecasts to the executive team and board of directors.
  • Oversee cash flow management, capital structure, and investment activities to optimize financial performance.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations, accounting standards, and internal controls.
  • Manage relationships with external partners including auditors, banks, and investors to secure funding and maintain financial credibility.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the finance team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
  • Analyze market trends and financial data to identify risks and opportunities for growth.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support operational efficiency and cost management initiatives.
