About The Position

This position primarily involves analyzing Laboratory quality control and patient specimens, as well as performing quality assurance tasks related to the analytic phase of Laboratory workflow. The technician will operate, maintain, and troubleshoot Laboratory analyzers for "waived" and "moderate complexity" testing. Key duties include collecting blood specimens, interacting with diverse patients, and handling/processing various specimens for Laboratory testing. The role also requires completing computerized tasks for patient registration, test order entry, specimen collection, receiving, and processing. Basic post-analytic tasks such as distributing reports and storing/retrieving specimens are also part of the job. The technician will provide guidance to phlebotomists and lab assistants to ensure optimal workflow and rapid problem resolution, while adhering to all local, state, and federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to ensure privacy and safety in patient care.

Requirements

  • High School or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • CPTI-Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (California)
  • 2 years recent relevant experience
  • Knowledge and practice of standard principles, processes, procedures, and equipment related to Ordering Laboratory testing
  • Knowledge and practice of standard principles, processes, procedures, and equipment related to Collecting blood specimens
  • Knowledge and practice of standard principles, processes, procedures, and equipment related to Compassionately and effectively interacting with patients
  • Knowledge and practice of standard principles, processes, procedures, and equipment related to Handling and processing biological specimens routinely submitted to the Laboratory for analysis
  • Knowledge and practice of standard principles, processes, procedures, and equipment related to Supporting the performance of waived and moderate complexity testing
  • Ability to accurately, precisely, and reliably perform job duties and assigned tasks
  • Ability to organize and prioritize job duties and assigned tasks for completion within expected timeframes
  • Ability to compassionately and effectively interact with patients of diverse ages, backgrounds, values, beliefs and behaviors
  • Knowledge of applicable local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures aimed at ensuring the privacy and safety of patients

Responsibilities

  • Operates, maintains and does basic troubleshooting of Laboratory analyzers that perform testing classified as "waived" and "moderate complexity"
  • Collects blood specimens
  • Interacts with patients of diverse ages, backgrounds, values, beliefs and behavior
  • Receives, handles and processes a variety of specimens for Laboratory testing
  • Completes computerized tasks related to patient registration and/or test order entry, specimen collection, receiving and processing
  • Performs basic post-analytic tasks, including distributing reports, storing and/or retrieving specimens
  • Provides guidance to phlebotomists and lab assistants to promote optimal workflow and rapid problem resolution
  • Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care
  • Appropriately respond to fluctuations in volume
  • Appropriately respond to unexpected situations or problems such as equipment or information system failure
  • Appropriately respond to shift-to-shift hand-offs
  • Appropriately respond to STAT test orders
  • Appropriately respond to specimen integrity issues
  • Regular review of pending logs, priority assignments, etc.
  • Follow standard practices, processes, and procedures in sequence
  • Recognize and appropriately escalate complex and unusual deviations, problems, unusual occurrences and unexpected outcomes
  • Work in a collaborative setting where the communication of current, factual, and relevant work information is required
