Appears as an expert witness to defend the value and ad valorem tax status in a variety of court settings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any field, plus three (3) years of appraisal experience OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience, with one (1) year as a Commercial Appraiser in the Salt Lake County Assessor's Office, or as a Commercial Appraiser in a County Assessor's Office in the State of Utah.
  • Must be a Certified General Appraiser.
  • Must have an Ad-Valorem General designation issued by the Utah State Tax Commission.
  • A valid Driver's License accepted by the State of Utah is required at the time of hire. A valid Driver's License issued by the State of Utah must be obtained within six (6) months of hire to operate a County vehicle.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares narrative appraisals of all types of commercial properties, including vacant commercial land, improved commercial properties, and unique commercial properties.
  • Appears as an expert witness to defend appraised value and taxable status at the State Tax Commission and all levels of appeals courts.
  • Trains and mentors' other commercial appraisals productivity.
  • Field inspects properties to collect and analyze data elements, such as property income, square footage, type, grade and quality of building's materials, conformity to area, age, neighborhood, and environmental influences.
  • Represents the Salt Lake County Assessor to taxpayers regarding valuation and property tax questions.
  • Collects and analyzes commercial income, sales, and rental data on all types of commercial property and land for use in appraisal valuation development.
  • Assists the Manager in researching and responding to Division Administrator, Assessor, Mayor, Council Members, other Elected Officials, and the public on difficult or controversial situations.
