About The Position

The University Library at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a Cataloging Librarian (Librarian I - Resource Management and Data Services, LM003) This position performs cataloging and other service functions in the System & Technical Services Department of the University Libraries. This position will work with varieties of formats and perform original cataloging as required. Coordinate in supervision of student assistants and provide support at public service desk(s). The person will maintain a cooperative, professional demeanor with students, faculty and staff. This position reports to the Head of Systems & Technical Services.

Requirements

  • Master of Library Science or related field/experience
  • Knowledge of cataloging rules, regulations, processes and procedures
  • Experience with library management systems
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff and faculty
  • Ability to work independently under a variety of complex rules and regulations
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and maintain work authorization throughout the employment term.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous library experience and/or classes
  • Experience with cataloging or ALMA integrated library management systems
  • Experience with cataloging various formats of materials including electronic resources
  • Experience with multiple concurrent processes and procedures

  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills.

Responsibilities

  • Catalog materials, including electronic and archival, following library policies and processes.
  • Add holdings and item information.
  • Review and edit, when necessary, electronic resource records, portfolios and linking in all formats, including but not limited to streaming videos, e-books, and journals.
  • Catalog the electronic Theses and Dissertation and upload to UW System repository.
  • Stay current with evolving cataloging rules, metadata standards, emerging technologies and propose strategies for keeping collection aligned with library policies.
  • Catalog materials in all formats adhering to professional CORE standards and local policy and procedures.
  • Verify and assign call numbers through the application of standards and principles.
  • Add and/or modify library holdings to OCLC and/or within the UW Libraries shared catalog.
  • Export bibliographic records to library’s shared catalog.
  • Create and update work procedures when necessary.
  • Assist with training, supervision, and evaluation of cataloging staff and student workers, including delegating tasks to achieve departmental goals.
  • Coordinate and assist withdrawal of materials.
  • Perform catalog maintenance projects as assigned.
  • Coordinate receiving, processing and cataloging material gifts.
  • Assist with annual statistics and other assessment projects.
  • Provide coverage for library service desks, as required.
  • Preforms other functions as requested.
  • Participates in committees and professional development opportunities.
  • Creates processes and maintains complex metadata records for the purposes of resource discovery, access, and inventory control by following local and national cataloging and metadata standards and exercising independent judgement
  • Performs acquisition processes, including bibliographic searching, vendor assignments, determination of holdings, and choice of entry and database record format
  • Identifies and evaluates preservation and curation needs of items and determines preservation solutions
  • Assists with provisioning of access to and discovery of electronic resources, coordinates online access, and troubleshoots issues to provide library patrons with consistent access
  • Assists in the analysis, planning, and deployment of resources to search, manipulate, and preserve information
  • Serves on committees to advance librarianship at the campus, local, and/or state levels
  • Contributes to the development of policies and procedures
  • May direct the day-to-day activities of student workers
  • Assists with the coordination of day-to-day functions of one or more library operations or services
