With about 40,000 employees, Duke is the third largest private employer in North Carolina, and it now has international programs in more than 150 countries.   The Career Specialist (level 12) partners with the MMS, MBCS, and MQM Program Directors in the Career Management Center to plan and facilitate engagement opportunities between industry representatives or employers and students. Responsibilities include maintaining day-to-day company relationships, supporting new business development, and administering educational programs and industry events to enable students in the Master of Management Studies (MMS), Master of Business, Climate, and Sustainability (MBCS), and Master of Quantitative Management (MQM) programs to explore career opportunities. This position reports to the Program Director for MMS and is an integral part of the Specialty Master’s Programs and Employer Engagement teams.  

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of professional work experience preferred, preferably in career services, recruiting, or customer service related fields.
  • Ability to interact effectively and build relationships with various constituents, including graduate students, business leaders, employers, alumni, faculty, and staff at all levels.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable with uncertainty and operating in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Positive attitude, creative thinker, and problem solver.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, supporting effective program and event delivery. Some travel required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be very comfortable learning and using technology tools, including database management, Internet research, Excel, email, and other tools.
  • Comfort with a fast-paced environment and ability to adapt to immediate changes driven by various constituent needs.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and deepen existing relationships with company contacts in person, by phone, and through email.
  • Develop a working knowledge of employment trends, positions for which companies hire, and desired qualities in candidates.
  • In collaboration with the Program Directors, understand the other organizations and people within Fuqua and Duke whose work focuses upon the assigned industries and build relationships with those constituents.  Partner and share information to better integrate careers and the job search with other learning opportunities.
  • Work closely with critical stakeholders at Duke, and company representatives to develop and execute effective recruiting and student engagement strategies.
  • In partnership with the Program Directors, proactively identify and cultivate employer partnerships by analyzing student interests, industry trends, alumni networks, and emerging sectors aligned with program strengths.
  • Initiate outreach campaigns and strategic engagement efforts to expand the portfolio of recruiting organizations and increase student access to career opportunities.
  • Coordinate and execute employer engagements, including but not limited to the company’s formal on-campus recruiting events such as information sessions, office hours, and interviews.
  • Coordinate and execute special student programs that enhance their understanding of careers and the job search, including but not limited to: Third-party services, such as outside speakers; CMC- developed and led workshops; Coaching appointments and walk-ups; Other special career development events sponsored by the CMC. 
  • Partner with student clubs and employer organizations as they plan events to minimize or eliminate conflicting activities.
  • As part of a broader team, assist with executing on-campus recruiting events, interviews, and multi-school career fairs.
  • Facilitate marketing and communications for company engagements, CMC programs, and events.
  • Assist in the training and preparation of new teammates.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and analyses.
  • Develop and implement project management plans as assigned.
  • Represent programs within the CMC in planning and decision processes. Help ensure that our offerings to both students and employers reflect their unique needs and create a successful platform for companies to engage with, recruit and hire Fuqua students and alumni.
  • Manage and participate in other CMC projects or programs as requested.
