About The Position

Lead cardiovascular surgical operations at an 815-bed Magnet-designated acute care hospital in Asheville, North Carolina, recognized in the top 1% of hospitals nationally for clinical quality and named one of America's 50 Best Hospitals. This CVOR Director role oversees 36 FTEs across 6 operating rooms (5 traditional, 1 hybrid) as the region's only provider of open heart and interventional cardiology services. The CVOR operates independently with separate physical, financial, and managerial structure, offering focused leadership of cardiac surgical services. The facility serves as the regional referral center for tertiary and quaternary care, operates as the busiest surgical hospital west of Raleigh and second-busiest in the state, and maintains Level II Trauma Center designation with Leapfrog "A" safety rating. Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Nursing OR Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with MBA, MHA, or related healthcare degree
  • Current North Carolina RN license in good standing or active multi-state compact license
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • National Nursing Leadership Certification required within 1 year of hire or by signed commitment letter
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive leadership experience
  • Open heart surgical experience required
  • Computer proficiency including word processing, spreadsheets, Internet/Intranet, and email
  • Demonstrated expertise in cardiovascular operating room operations and cardiac surgery programs

Responsibilities

  • Direct cardiovascular operating room operations, programs, and activities for 6-room CVOR department in alignment with organizational strategic plan.
  • Oversee financial management including budget development, monitoring, staffing models, resource allocation, and cost optimization for cardiac surgical services.
  • Establish department and service line goals supporting strategic objectives while ensuring operational excellence and growth.
  • Direct operations ensuring every patient achieves desired outcomes without harm, waste, and with excellent experience.
  • Promote research and integrate evidence-based practices into clinical, operational, and leadership processes.
  • Integrate clinical, human resource, and financial data to support strategic decision-making and performance optimization.
  • Oversee nursing practice model ensuring excellence in cardiovascular surgical care delivery and Magnet standards compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, and regulatory/accrediting agency requirements for cardiovascular surgery programs.
  • Model, facilitate, and promote relationship-centered leadership and professional practice environment for nursing staff.
  • Manage on-call team (3 staff) and late call team to ensure 24/7 coverage for emergent cardiac surgical cases.
  • Collaborate with cardiovascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize surgical outcomes.
  • Monitor key performance indicators, patient satisfaction, and clinical outcomes to drive continuous improvement in cardiac surgery.
  • Build and retain high-performing CVOR teams through recruitment, coaching, performance management, and professional development.
  • Participate in leadership growth and development initiatives to advance personal and organizational effectiveness.
  • Support hybrid room operations and advanced cardiovascular surgical technologies.
