About The Position

The Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) is seeking a Supplemental Instructor (Professional Tutor) for the following areas: Principles of Accounting II (ACC-112) Computer Applications (BUS-115) Developmental English (ENG-085 and ENG-095) Culinary Arts (CUL 107, CUL 108, CUL 214, CUL 109, CUL 280) Veterinary program (VET 134 and 158) Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) and management of the Assistant Supplemental Instruction (SI) Coordinator, SI Leaders assist HCC students through weekly study sessions. SI exists as a program of peer and professional leaders available to help HCC students in challenging courses. SI Leaders are assigned to work with a particular course for the semester. SI Leaders help to integrate effective learning and study strategies for their assigned students, while at the same time helping to clarify and/or reinforce course content. SI Leaders assist HCC students in becoming more successful and independent learners.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalency, no degree;
  • One (1) to Two (2) semesters as a college student;
  • Ability to work well with a diverse student population;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain the class roster of the assigned course(s).
  • Note any changes in the class roster throughout the term.
  • Attend the first week of class meetings of the assigned course(s) and further class meetings if applicable.
  • Obtain the course syllabus.
  • Obtain course material(s).
  • Read assigned materials, including text(s) and supplemental readings.
  • Take notes during lecture/lab if applicable.
  • Conduct SI sessions per week throughout the term.
  • Maintain contact with the faculty member of the assigned course(s) and provide information regarding students' progress weekly.
  • Contact faculty members when needed regarding course materials/assignments.
  • Verify if faculty members will offer students extra credit or incentives for attendance at SI sessions.
  • Access course software or Canvas and participate as needed.
  • Collect data via your CAPS Activity Log regarding student interactions.
  • Collaborate with CAPS Assistants to ensure accuracy of data.
  • Use strategies learned through SI Orientation and CAPS Tutor Training to create and use SI session handouts approved by faculty.
  • Meet with the Assistant SI Coordinator to discuss the planning of SI sessions, use of SI handouts, use of a wide variety of learning strategies, and troubleshoot potential problems.
  • Other responsibilities: provide extra SI sessions as necessary, and meet with other SI Leaders and supervisory staff at scheduled meetings.
