About The Position

This position will interact with architects, designers, contractors, CAC staff, City of Chicago agencies, and other stakeholders to be an advocate for the Chicago Architecture Center’s mission and ensure seamless design construction. The successful candidate must have strong project management skills, keeping sight of the “big picture” while managing many levels of detail, with the goal of creating a world-class architecture center that provides an unrivaled visitor experience. The Capital Projects Manager is responsible for the planning and execution of renovation projects at the CAC. This position reports to the President and CEO and works closely with a cross-department team that includes the CFO, Chief Program Officer, Director of Executive Affairs and team members in Exhibitions, Public Engagement, Learning, Volunteer Community and Development. The core focus of this position will be executing the Center’s renovation project from late schematic design to completion of construction. The Capital Projects Manager will be the owner’s representative that liaises with external vendors including architects, contractors, grant administrators and building representatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, Construction Management or Engineering equivalent preferred.
  • 8 - 10 years of experience in project design/construction management or equivalent required, primarily within cultural, nonprofit, and/or education specific settings.
  • Comprehensive understanding of project delivery gained through documented education and/or experience.

Responsibilities

  • In coordination with CAC staff and the architect, creates the master design and construction timeline. This will also include approval, funding, and communication milestones supplied by the CAC team.
  • Facilitates and drives internal stakeholder meetings to advance design and construction timeline.
  • Coordinates all production / construction aspects of the project(s), including necessary architect/engineer/contractor selection, scope of work development, bidding, permits and approvals, contract management, construction management, commissioning/closeout, project documentation and compliance, and facilitates communication to all Center stakeholders throughout.
  • Ensures clear understanding of project and impact in relation to funding accountability and alignment with emerging strategic goals.
  • Works with the CFO and Director of Foundation and Institutional Relations to monitor and manage project budgets. Approves project expenses within established budgets. Reviews any budget revisions with project stakeholders.
  • Co-lead the Facilities Task Force with the CFO
  • Coordinates with Development team members to accurately track, report, and allocate complex government and private grants and funds related to capital improvements. This includes timely managing required City of Chicago grant reporting requirements with the contractors and architect.
  • Facilitates project schedules with all relevant internal and external stakeholders, including Facilities and Operations teams, requiring a high level of communication and awareness during public hours.
  • Leverages existing and new project management tools (e.g., MS TEAMS, ASANA, etc.) to advance project and communicate tasks and milestones.
  • Serves as liaison with external collaborators, including board and facility task force meetings, for sharing of best practices information in different settings and project updates.
  • Work with the Chief Program Officer and programming teams to oversee the development, design, fabrication and installation of exhibits and public spaces.
  • Work with the Development team to ensure a smooth process incorporating fundraising and exhibit development.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications staff on communication strategy.
