About The Position

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity is seeking an organized, professional, and results-oriented individual to serve as an Accountant within the Budget Office. The Accountant position will assist in analyzing, monitoring, and preparing reports on the Department’s expenditures, while ensuring spending plans align with budgetary requirements. This position will coordinate program budgets with program managers and instruct staff on various accounting functions. The ideal candidate will be organized and able to analyze and report on expenditure data. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, with courses in business administration and accounting, or four (4) years of technical accounting experience.
  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This may require the ability to work evenings and weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers intermediate-level experience in Excel, or a related software program, writing formulas, reviewing data, creating charts and graphs, and using macros.
  • Prefer one (1) or more years of knowledge and experience in accounting, grant, or financial software applications like SAP, Amplifund, Oracle, OpenGov, LSL, or others.
  • Prefer one (1) year of experience conducting data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct input to the Unit Supervisor for the review and approval of the Department's fiscal budgets, utilizing electronic spreadsheets and automated accounting system queries, prepares expenditure projections for the upcoming fiscal year based on actual spending in program areas in current fiscal year.
  • Maintains records, reports and documents for processing of Bond Release forms with the Office of Management and Budget, Governor's Office and Comptroller's Office.
  • Monitors capital funds for the Department and prepares financial reports utilizing electronic spreadsheets and automated accounting systems to determine ongoing fund availability as expenditures change throughout the fiscal year.
  • Develops expertise on all department programs associated resource availability including state, federal, indirect costs and revenue resources for use in budget projections and presentations.
  • Conducts routine review of pending legislation and assist in the preparation of fiscal notes for budgetary planning.
  • Compiles financial data for revenue resources required by internal and external auditors, federal grant and project managers, contractors and consultants.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
