About The Position

The University of Maine’s College of Earth, Life, and Health seeks an applicant with enthusiasm and a background in science or engineering who is professional, adaptable, and a good problem-solver to support activities related to campus residential life, programmed learning activities, and research operations at the Darling Marine Center. The person in this position will serve as a primary contact for UMaine students and visitors in campus residences, lead tours for campus visitors, provide safety briefings to campus students and visitors, and collaboratively work with DMC staff members to help foster positive and productive experiences for people utilizing the facility. An ideal candidate will have experience with the operation of technical scientific instrumentation and laboratory seawater pumps, as well as working knowledge of coastal processes, marine ecology, and field measurement and sampling methods. The position requires residence in living quarters on the DMC campus. Typical hiring range for this position is $52,000 to $54,080 commensurate with qualifications and experience. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an earth (e.g. marine, geoscience), life (e.g. biology, ecology), or environmental science, an engineering discipline (e.g. civil, environmental, mechanical), or related field
  • Work experience as a student assistant or professional staff in one or more of the following areas: scientific research, field measurements in coastal and marine environments, engineering applications in research facilities, ecological science, or higher education
  • Confidence working on measurements and instruction in outdoor field locations, including but not limited to rocky intertidal shorelines, woodland trails, mudflats, and aboard small water craft and vessels, exposed to sun, cold, insects, and outdoor weather year-round
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, be eligible for approval as a University vehicle driver, and be comfortable driving passenger vans
  • Familiarity with college residence life oversight responsibilities and/or comparable leadership experience
  • Familiarity with research and education activities at coastal and marine field stations
  • Familiarity with Microsoft (e.g. Word, Excel) and Google applications
  • Must be able to lift up to 40lbs regularly and perform other manual and physically demanding tasks as required
