About The Position

The Associate Director reports to the Chief Executive Officer and resides at Camp from June through August and for additional time as needed for rentals during the off season. Camp Hale provides room and board. This position works with the Camp Director to lead and coordinate all aspects of the Camp Hale Operations and programs. This includes recruiting youth, hiring, training, and supervising staff, and directly managing the Chef, facilities team, and Nurse. In addition, this role is responsible for overseeing quality camper experience, starting with recruitment. This position will also maintain systems and ensure facilities are safe and functional prior to and throughout the summer sessions, handling partnerships with local agencies such as plumber, electrician, and tree work, processing invoices, ensuring quality services in compliance with state and local regulations, and ensuring alignment with United South End Settlement's policies and procedures. Due to the nature of running an overnight summer camp that is in session 7 days a week during the summer, the hours during the summer are non-traditional and will routinely include weekends and evenings.

Requirements

  • At least 3-5 years experience in youth development or in the camping arena, with at least 2 years experience in program coordination or management. Extensive leadership experience in a camp or youth program preferred
  • At least 2-3 years experience supervising staff preferred
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated timely problem-solving skills and flexibility
  • Familiarity and experience with American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation standards strongly preferred
  • A team player-collaborative, adaptable, and values working as part of a close-knit team
  • Must be able to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and be capable of repetitive motion (with or without accommodation).
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly.
  • Detail oriented, organized, and the ability to maintain good time management
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to communicate in a positive manner with camp staff, campers, parents, partners and the public
  • Able to work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, and live on site during camp sessions
  • Valid Driver's License, clean driving record
  • Current certification in First aid and CPR
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside the Camp Administration Team to oversee the planning and implementation of curriculum for campers and LITs that promote positive youth development and environmental learning.
  • Ensure the safe and secure operation of the camp, including safety drills and procedures.
  • Responsible for overseeing and managing the camper experience; this includes camper behaviors and parent communication.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining program goals, activities, policies, and procedures that reflect current best practices in youth development.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with Camp Hale campers, families, and staff.
  • Create and sustain a safe camp environment
  • Oversee all facility maintenance operations to ensure timely repairs and replacements, maintaining safety and functionality across camp property.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of maintenance staff, vendors, and contractors to ensure high-quality, cost-effective results.
  • Manage all facilities-related contracts, ensuring vendors meet performance expectations and service timelines.
  • Oversee required water testing by designated staff and ensure results are accurately documented and submitted to the Department of Health and Human Services in compliance with state regulations.
  • Complete daily rounds to supervise and assess the needs and safety of campers, staff, and the overall program.
  • Responsible for the overall pre-season preparation, in-season maintenance, and post-season clean-up of the Camp program.
  • Attend and actively engage in special events and staff meetings and lead tours of the site.
  • Manage communication with USES operations and HR team, including hiring and onboarding documentation for all staff.
  • Manage all vendors and contract employees
  • In collaboration with the Director, act as the onsite supervisor for all rentals outside of the Camp season.
  • Support and assist the management of ACA re-accreditation.
  • Provide supervision, support, and direction to Camp Nurse and Camp Chef as well as other staff members including counselors, LIT coordinator, etc.
  • Serve as a thought partner in expanding and marketing Camp Hale to attract families from diverse communities.
  • Assist with Camp Hale recruitment and enrollment; this includes attending camper fairs, performing 1st-time camper interviews, and doing community outreach.
  • Assist with planning and facilitating pre-camp staff training.
  • Coordinate with the USES Marketing and Communications Manager for social media and PR for Camp Hale.
  • Lead and manage all parent communications throughout the Camp season, ensuring timely, accurate, and engaging updates.
  • Maintain the Camp blog and other communication channels to keep families informed and connected.
  • Support USES's development and Boston-based team with fundraising, donor information, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
