About The Position

Camp Counselor Job Description The Camp Counselor is responsible for the supervision and safety of campers. To be considered for a summer camp position, we prefer that you are available to work entire camp session because this provides staff continuity for our campers. Immediate Supervisor: The Camp Counselor is responsible to the Site Supervisor. Essential Functions: Direct and supervise activities for campers. Supervise campers in camp-wide activities providing for their safety and well-being. Campers should never be left alone. Enforce all camp regulations and promote the camp’s philosophy. Assist in all camp-related activities including swimming. Participate in weekly planning staff meeting. Prepare daily plans and evaluations as requested. Use all camp equipment and property in a proper manner. Follow all camp procedures and regulations. Complete all other duties as assigned. Implement/lead new and creative activities. Conduct oneself as a leader and role model for campers. As well as plan the activities for campers participate in activities with them throughout the entire day. To establish a positive relationship with the Site Supervisor regarding curriculum, reports, trips etc. Serve in a professional and courteous manner with the highest regard to customer. Keep all equipment and supplies in good working condition and also in a neat and orderly fashion. Psychological Considerations: The Camp Counselor may need to resolve differences and problems that arise with campers. May also have to work under stressful situations when First Aid or CPR is required. Must have the ability to lift 40 pounds. Environmental Considerations: Most activities are performed outdoors. These environmental conditions include weather conditions such as extreme heat, humidity and sun exposure. May be required to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds when setting up for certain programs or activities. PPE is required during specific projects or tasks which require appropriate safety measures such as hearing or eye protection, use of respirators and other protective items as needed. Cognitive Considerations: Must possess good safety awareness and judgment. Must be friendly and like to work with people of all ages. Employee must be able to listen, hear and speak. Use of hands and fingers will regularly be required, and the ability to stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus. Safety Responsibilities Analyze the environment for safety hazards and eliminate them before accidents happen. Notify the Head Counselor immediately of any hazards that need to be fixed and when the first aid supplies are needed. Use camp equipment in a safe and proper manner. Report any issues to the Site Supervisor immediately. Administer first aid to one’s capabilities. Watch for unauthorized persons loitering or taking pictures around camp sites/parks. Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the district’s safety program. Follow “Communicable Disease Guidelines” when preparing food. (See Communicable Disease Guideline Policy.

Requirements

  • Must be energetic, responsible and enjoy working with children.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age by June 3.
  • Must have strong organizational and leadership/supervisory skills.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Must possess good safety awareness and judgment.
  • Must be friendly and like to work with people of all ages.
  • Employee must be able to listen, hear and speak.
