About The Position

The Belle Isle Nature Center, a facility of the Detroit Zoological Society, hosts nature-based summer day camps for children in Detroit. We seek motivated, dynamic individuals who want to make a difference and share nature with youth in a summer day camp setting. Camp takes place on Belle Isle, near downtown Detroit. The chosen candidate will work with the Camp Director to coordinate daily camp activities and support camp staff in a summer day camp. The chosen candidate must be available the entire camp season, from June 8 to August 14, 2026 and available Monday through Friday. Compensation for this role is $19/hour.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Education, General Science, Zoology, Biology or other related field
  • Two years of experience in a zoological institution, formal or informal learning institution or youth organization
  • Must hold a valid operator license with an excellent driving record
  • Experience working with people of all ages, especially children
  • Must be a great team player with excellent communication and people skills
  • Familiar with concepts of biology, environmental science or animal welfare and a willingness to learn more
  • Will use a computer, printer, two-way radio and iPad
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Must be reasonable, diplomatic and use common sense to make sound decisions
  • Must have the ability to think quickly and identify solutions to customer service issues
  • Must be professional and have a positive, friendly, social disposition
  • Before hire, must clear a background check and pre-employment drug screening

Nice To Haves

  • Previous camp experience is helpful but not necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Camp Director in the coordination of daily activities, general camp operations and programs to ensure a quality experience for up to 40 campers weekly
  • Support the needs of camp participants
  • Ensure staff are engaged and interacting with campers to create a positive community in their group
  • Substitute for absent Lead and Assistant Teachers when necessary
  • Welcome parents and campers during check-in and check-out
  • Fill in and provide breaks for staff as necessary
  • Assist in managing and organizing camp supplies
  • Set up and break down camp-wide activities, lead community circles each morning
  • In concert with the Camp Director, respond to incidents as necessary
  • Act as a role model and resource for campers and staff at all times
  • Communicate effectively with campers, teaching staff, Camp Director and parents
  • Must be available for a weekday work schedule, typically 8:15 a.m.- 4:45 p.m.
  • Follow organizational policies and procedures at all times
  • Become familiar with facets of the Belle Isle Nature Center and Detroit Zoological Society in order to answer questions properly
