About The Position

SERC's mission is to reduce risks to the reliability and security of the electric grid (also known as the bulk power system), not only for today but also for the future. Our team also partners with the best and brightest individuals from both the power industry and the federal government to understand and address the challenges facing the grid. These key partnerships make our work more informed, pragmatic, responsive, and impactful. Analytics is key to understanding and predicting system performance. SERC's Analytics and Data Management program provides a platform for turning data into insights that inform decisions and improve outcomes. Using a mix of analytics, visualization, automation, and modeling techniques, the Business Intelligence Analyst integrates and analyzes diverse data to deliver decision support products for departments, managers, and executives. The Analyst also provides data, analytics, and performance insights that help stakeholders identify risks, monitor trends, and strengthen the reliability and security of the Bulk Power System. The Analyst is skilled in data management, analytical techniques, and metrics optimization. They combine technical skills like programming, data modeling, and statistics with soft skills like communication, analytical thinking, and problem-solving. Using these skills the analyst will partner with internal and external stakeholders to generate actionable business insights and solutions.

Requirements

  • BS or AA in Information Management, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Economics, Statistics, Business Intelligence or equivalent combination of training and/or education.
  • Minimum of one to three years of previous analyst experience in a data-intensive environment.
  • Intermediate proficiency with SQL, Python, and Excel (e.g., PowerPivot; VBA/macros a plus) and familiarity with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or SAS.
  • Strong critical thinking, statistical reasoning, attention to detail, and an investigative/problem-solving mindset.
  • Proven ability to translate requirements and present insights and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Highly organized, able to manage multiple priorities, work independently or collaboratively, and adapt to changing processes with a continuous-improvement mindset.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred candidates will have previous experience in the electric industry, electric power generation, transmission, and power system reliability; as well as knowledge of the business and operational functions of an electric utility and familiarity with the risks and controls of these functions.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze nuanced data to identify trends, anomalies, and patterns; develop recommendations that improve performance, optimization, and business value.
  • Collect, clean, validate, and analyze data from multiple sources using tools such as SQL, Python, Excel, and BI platforms applying appropriate statistical and analytical methods.
  • Combine data from various sources and document data relationships (data modeling).
  • Conduct ad-hoc and exploratory analyses to support operational decisions, strategic planning, and stakeholder requests.
  • Explore and apply responsible AI-enabled capabilities where appropriate to improve efficiency and consistency, consistent with security and governance requirements.
  • Communicate data insights to leadership and other stakeholders via presentations or by maintaining reports, dashboards, and visualizations.
  • Develop, implement, and follow data policies, procedures, and standards for data collection, quality, governance, and analysis.
  • Identify and implement process improvement opportunities including workflow automation.
  • Facilitate and coordinate data submittals through SERC and NERC systems.
  • Partner with cross functional teams as a subject matter expert providing analytical support, technical leadership, and recommendations aligned to department and organizational goals.
  • Implement other duties and responsibilities, as directed.
