Dewberry is seeking a Business Development Director for its Fairfax, VA office. The Business Development Director will support Dewberry’s strategic growth initiatives, cultivate and expand high-value client relationships, and drive new business pursuits in the public and private sectors in the Mid-Atlantic. The ideal candidate has a strong background in architecture, engineering, or construction services, deep market insight, and a demonstrated record of winning work and advancing client relationships. They will be responsible for working collaboratively to execute business development strategy, aligning Dewberry capabilities with client needs, and positioning Dewberry for sustainable long-term growh. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive business development experience in the Virginia AEC industry, with significant client relationship ownership and strategic pursuit leadership.
  • Proven record of leading successful new business pursuits and contributing to measurable revenue growth.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, presentation, and negotiation skills with the ability to build credibility at senior client levels.
  • Strong strategic thinking, analysis, and planning capabilities with a results-oriented mindset.
  • Deep understanding of public and private procurement processes, contract vehicles, and project delivery models.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and ability to pass a driving record background check.

Responsibilities

  • Establish, maintain, and strengthen strategic relationships with key clients, owners, agencies, and industry partners across public and private sector clients.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and primary point of contact for assigned clients and partners, understanding their business priorities, procurement strategies, and long-term plans.
  • Anticipate client needs and proactively develop integrated solutions that align the firm’s design and technical capabilities with client objectives.
  • In coordination with marketing and operations, support client engagement planning, including regular communication plans, satisfaction tracking, and client action planning.
  • Develop, implement, and refine business development strategies to grow market share and diversify growth opportunities.
  • Based on institutional client knowledge, support capture planning and pursuit teams for major proposals and strategic opportunities, including development of value propositions and win strategies.
  • Identify and qualify new business opportunities, market trends, competitive dynamics, and partnership or teaming opportunities.
  • Support marketing efforts in RFP/RFQ responses, interviews, and other client-focused activities.
  • Collaborate with Dewberry leadership (operations, technical leads, marketing) to align business strategies with market demand, firm capabilities, and growth goals.
  • Contribute to development of annual business development plans, target client lists, and revenue forecasts.
  • Share insights and intelligence on competitor activity, client trends, and emerging market sectors.
  • Represent Dewberry at industry events, professional associations, and client forums to strengthen brand visibility and professional networks.
  • Partner with marketing and communications teams to develop content, presentations, and targeted campaigns that support business development goals.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and coaching to other business development staff and cross-functional client management and pursuit teams.
  • Promote a collaborative, client-focused culture with high ethical standards and integrated team performance.
  • Work collaboratively with other business development professionals to develop best practices, standards, and elevate overall market position.
