About The Position

The Business Data Analyst plays a critical role in ensuring accurate and timely data migration to Casella’s Lead-to-Cash environment, focusing on leveraging expertise in Soft-Pak and deep operational knowledge of the waste industry. This role is responsible for gathering, mapping, and validating master and transactional source system data to meet Casella’s Gold Standard requirements and comply with Soft-Pak functionality. Working closely with IT, business teams, and local site stakeholders, the Data Steward supports clean data integration, master data governance, and ongoing business needs. The position requires strong qualitative and quantitative data analysis abilities, deep knowledge of Soft-Pak and the waste industry, and an aptitude for building collaborative partnerships to maintain data integrity and business continuity.

Requirements

  • The successful candidate will possess a strong working knowledge of the solid waste industry from an operations, accounting, or financial background, along with demonstrated Soft‑Pak expertise and operational waste‑industry knowledge.
  • The incumbent must be able to balance data gathering and analysis while working with key staff to complete critical business projects, requiring experience with ETL data‑migration processes, functional and technical data mapping, and acquisitions-related data transformations.
  • A strong desire and aptitude for technical skill development—including a willingness to learn SQL script writing, data querying, and data analysis—is essential.
  • The role also requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal abilities, keen attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a collaborative environment.
  • Candidates must demonstrate exceptional analytical and formal presentation capabilities, the ability to multitask and meet consistent deadlines, and strong time‑management and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with complex computer applications and financial modeling is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of the waste industry and Soft-Pak’s operational capabilities, including building customer profiles from different lines of business, analyzing how size and charge codes impact billing, and applying knowledge of Casella’s Gold Standard service offerings.
  • Applies critical understanding of Soft-Pak tables (customer, services, routing, notes, etc.) and demonstrates a strong operational knowledge of Soft-Pak functionalities and processes (e.g., differences between contract pricing and auto charges service types).
  • Leads the ongoing development, governance, and stewardship of Casella’s master data, including products, materials, services, and related items.
  • Defines and creates Casella’s Gold Standard business requirements to inform ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) logic for data migrations.
  • Partners with the ETL Migration Lead and Casella IT team to validate conversion logic, ensuring that all migration processes fulfill both technical validation test cases and Casella’s Gold Standard business processes.
  • Extracts and prepares master and transactional data sets from source systems to enable comprehensive analysis, conducts technical object and business data mapping, and detectss data inconsistencies from target system
  • Makes informed technical and business decisions for data migration fixes by considering customer impact, Casella IT and business effort, manual intervention, and dependencies on other business groups (Sales, Customer Care, Finance, etc.).
  • Builds strong relationships with local site stakeholders to facilitate source system data cleanup efforts throughout the data migration process and post go-live in the target technical environment.
  • Supports the implementation of new fees derived from acquisition data and performs impact assessments on Casella’s Gold Standard fee structures.
  • Participates in training and other learning opportunities to expand knowledge of the company, products, sales and services and performs any other duties needed to help drive our vision, fulfill our mission, and/or abide by our core values.
