About The Position

The Building Engineer is responsible for overseeing the overall performance of facility services for Harvard Business School (HBS). This role focuses on achieving and exceeding operational efficiency, managing budgets, and fostering a safe, inclusive, and positive workplace environment that supports the academic and administrative mission of HBS. The Building Engineer will support the development and execution of strategic initiatives aligned with Harvard Business School’s standards of operational excellence, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, reliable, and sustainable facility services. This position is integral to managing all services related to facility management across assigned HBS facilities.

Requirements

  • Diploma, Degree, or Postgraduate qualification in Facility Management, Project Management, Management, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; willingness to learn Harvard Business School–specific systems and additional software as required.
  • Minimum of 4 to 7 years of experience in facility management or a related operational role.
  • Solid understanding of project management principles and practices.
  • Ability to anticipate organizational needs, adapt to evolving priorities, and manage multiple initiatives effectively.
  • Knowledge of business administration principles with demonstrated experience managing budgets.
  • Highly self-motivated with sound judgment and strong decision-making skills.
  • Proven ability to interact professionally with senior leadership, faculty, staff, vendors, and service partners.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required to support Harvard Business School operations.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the physical ability to perform tasks including standing, sitting, walking, and other routine facility-related activities.

Responsibilities

  • Support and lead management and supervisory teams across all shifts within Harvard Business School facilities, developing standardized operational procedures and providing training and ongoing support for site managers.
  • Liaise with Harvard Business School internal teams, vendors, and department heads to coordinate resources, understand timelines, and address facility-related requests and quality objectives.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of facility management best practices and manage a non-unionized workforce supporting HBS operations.
  • Develop, track, and manage an annual maintenance schedule for Harvard Business School facilities, ensuring proactive communication with key stakeholders and serving as a responsible steward of HBS assets.
  • Act as a change agent to enhance workplace culture across HBS facilities, collaborating with quality assurance teams to monitor, report, and continuously improve quality control systems.
  • Partner with the Safety Management Department at Harvard Business School to ensure compliance with all safety procedures, health regulations, and inspection requirements, utilizing inspection and reporting software as needed.
  • Attend all required Harvard Business School and vendor meetings, provide internal and external site reports, and lead site teams to meet organizational and project objectives.
  • Participate in the affirmative action program and manage recruitment efforts in support of Harvard University and Harvard Business School diversity and inclusion goals.
  • Plan and direct team activities to ensure high client satisfaction for HBS stakeholders while implementing best practices to improve efficiency and manage vendor relationships.
  • Review service contracts to ensure alignment with Harvard Business School facility management needs, monitoring staffing levels and departmental schedules for optimal resource utilization.
  • Prepare and manage labor and expense budgets, oversee payment processes, and generate regular financial and operational reports related to Harvard Business School facilities.
  • Develop and implement cost-reduction strategies while enforcing appropriate security and access-control practices across HBS properties.
