About The Position

The Intern will work directly with budget analysts and senior staff to help develop, analyze, and monitor the State’s budget. The Intern will meaningfully contribute to Budget Office priorities by selecting, in consultation with staff, a research project on a key area of importance and presenting findings to management at the conclusion of the internship. The Rhode Island Budget Office is seeking a graduate or undergraduate student for a 10-week Summer Budget and Policy Internship. This position provides hands-on experience in state government budgeting, fiscal analysis, and policy development within the executive branch.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program (e.g., MPA, MPP, MBA, Economics, Public Policy, Public Finance, or related field)
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Interest in public service and state government

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with public budgeting, public finance, microeconomics, or statistics
  • Experience working with state or local governments

Responsibilities

  • Conducting fiscal and policy research on budget practices across states
  • Analyzing state agency budgets
  • Evaluating the fiscal impact of proposed legislation
  • Projecting and reviewing revenues and expenditures
  • Participating in meetings with agency staff and Budget Office personnel
