About The Position

This position is intended to introduce the intern to the government affairs and advocacy arena at the local, state, and federal level while providing support and assistance to the Allegheny Conference Growth Team. While every effort will be made to tailor each internship to the student’s interests, in general, the intern will be expected to assist where requested in the areas of legislative, policy, communications, and administrative duties. Additionally, the intern will play a key role in monitoring and tracking regional developments, including government actions, policy proposals, and economic trends relevant to the organization’s mission. Intern will report to the Vice President, Public Affairs, but will work collaboratively with, and at the request of, other staff.

Requirements

  • High interest and understanding of the public policy process and how government operates on local, state and federal levels.
  • Awareness of regional issues and economic development trends impacting Pittsburgh and the 10-county region.
  • Proactive self-starter with strong research and communication skills.
  • Ability to monitor and synthesize complex legislative and policy information.
  • Mature and responsible attitude.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Strong writing and speaking skills.
  • Strong customer service and phone skills.
  • Responsible and punctual.
  • Working knowledge of the legislative process.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint and other basic computer programs and functions.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with legislative and/or public policy research.
  • Monitors and tracks local, state, and federal government actions, including local council and committee meetings, legislative proposals, and policy discussions impacting the region.
  • Draft summaries, meeting notes, letters, emails, and/or other communications.
  • Coordinates special projects and attends meetings on behalf of the organization, as requested.
  • Monitors and tracks issues related to the regions' Chambers of Commerce; keep calendar of upcoming Chamber events and engagements.
  • Supports projects and events, as assigned.
  • Contributes to the efficiency of the organization by performing other duties, as requested.
