About The Position

The National Association of Home Builders’ Summer Internship Program offers a structured, hands-on experience designed to provide meaningful exposure to the housing industry and the policy environment that shapes it. Located in the National Housing Center and based in Washington, D.C., the summer program places interns alongside experienced professionals, where they contribute to real-time initiatives, develop practical skills, and gain insight into the work of a national trade association. As a part of the Advocacy team, the Government Affairs Intern will support NAHB’s State and Local Government Affairs group in advancing pro-housing policy initiatives across the country. This role provides direct exposure to legislative research, policy strategy, and stakeholder engagement and is ideal for a student interested in public policy, advocacy, and the intersection of government and industry. This internship is unpaid; however, students may be eligible to receive academic credit through their college or university, where applicable.

Requirements

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey ideas clearly and persuasively in both small and large group settings
  • Knowledge of and interest in contemporary issues, political institutions, and community challenges, including an understanding of their historical context
  • Interest in public policy and a willingness to engage thoughtfully in discussion and analysis

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and analysis on housing-related legislation introduced in state legislatures nationwide
  • Support the development and refinement of model legislation aligned with NAHB’s policy priorities
  • Maintain and update the State and Local Issues library with current resources and publications
  • Assist in developing strategies to support state and local home builder associations in advancing policy initiatives
  • Attend external meetings and briefings with elected officials, government agencies, and stakeholder organizations
  • Draft policy summaries, talking points, and briefing materials to support internal and external communications across NAHB’s federation
  • Collaborate with NAHB staff and local associations to strengthen engagement and alignment on key policy issues
