About The Position

Alternative Family Services is a Foster Family, Adoption and Mental Health Agency that has been serving abused and neglected children in our community since 1973. Our mission is to support vulnerable children and families in need of stability, safety, and well-being in communities. We provide a wide range of foster, adoption, mental health and transition-aged youth services in English and Spanish. We have eight locations throughout the Bay Area and 200 employees. We celebrate diversity, equal opportunity, and excellence. AFS is currently seeking additional members for its Board of Directors. In upholding our commitment to a diverse board of professional and personal experience, we welcome candidates whose backgrounds reflect the primary populations we serve, particularly communities of color, and who provide diversity of professional and personal experience needed to help AFS to make the best decisions. Our Board members are active, contributing leaders in AFS. Responsibilities include attendance at six Board meetings during the year as well as an annual one-day Board retreat. Most of our meetings are held virtually via zoom, with a once per year face to face meeting. Each Board member serves on two of our four board committees (Audit, Finance, Programs, and Resource Development) and is responsible to attend virtual committee meetings. Board members also provide ad-hoc advice on various business matters based on their individual areas of expertise. The time commitment for all activities varies, but has historically averaged around 6-10 hours a month. Our Board fully participates in fundraising through acquiring donations from individuals, corporations, and grants, working as a team to remove any potential barriers.
