About The Position

Spend your spring and summer in Maryland, playing a vital role at Naval Air Station Patuxent River as a Bird Survey Intern. Interns perform crucial tasks in support of our mission.

Requirements

  • Valid driver license
  • Personal vehicle recommended Schedule: A Monday-Friday, 40 hour/week schedule is expected. Some evening and night work will be necessary to document certain bird species.
  • This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Nice To Haves

  • Local candidates are preferred due to lack of housing; however, non-local candidates will be considered if they can find their own housing.
  • Ideal candidate has the ability to work with minimal supervision in areas with poisonous plants and animals, allergens, temperature extremes, and inclement weather
  • Minimum of 2 years of college in the area related to ornithology, wildlife management/biology, natural resources or other biological sciences
  • experience in habitat survey
  • experience with bird identification (sight and/or sound) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Survey Bald Eagle, Osprey, and other raptor nests on the installation, 50%
  • Conduct habitat management for state-listed butterfly species and surveys for federally listed Monarch butterflies, 20%.
  • Assist with acoustic bat surveys 10%
  • Conduct submerged aquatic vegetation surveys, 5%
  • Conduct weekly checks and maintenance of nest boxes, recording species usage, 10%
  • Assist with environmental education outreach, 5%
