About The Position

The Biomedical Maintenance Technician performs complex electronic equipment troubleshooting, repairs medical / dental equipment including x-ray systems, interprets wiring schematics engineering circuit and replaces faulty components. Coordinates preventive maintenance schedules, calibrations and electrical safety testing criteria according to manufacturer’s specifications for medical devices to efficiently mitigate patientcare inconsistencies and maintain a good client-driven culture for: The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine (CDM), Dental Clinics Building, CDM areas in Basic Science Building, Hospital Oral Surgery Clinic, West Ashley Medical Pavilion Dental Clinic, Nexton's Dental Clinic and the dental college research laboratories. Provides mentors and provides technical guidance to junior technicians, works with doctors, professors, researchers, and healthcare staff. The Biomedical Maintenance Technician is a highly specialized/experience technician who performs digital troubleshooting utilizing digital multimeters, air-water schematics for maintenance on dental chairs, dental units, digital x-ray film digitizers, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) 3D medical imaging systems such as Intraoral, panoramic, and cephalometric x-ray digital systems, tabletop digital cassette autoclaves, industrial large steam sterilizers and all other equipment items related to dental medicine. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on medical devices updates computer maintenance management automation system / database and is assistant department supervisor/ manager during the supervisors absence. This role may require travel as needed to the aforementioned locations.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and two years experience or training within the specific work area.
  • Some positions require certification in CPR by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to learn and use new processes, tools, equipment as required.

  • Maintains and repairs various medical devices to include diagnostics, surgical, therapeutic, laboratory, research analyzers and radiology imaging equipment. Also conducts dental unit waterline quality testing according to CDM, Center of Disease Control (CDC), American Dental Association (ADA) for patient safety. Provide data for managing the amalgam hazmat programs, contract maintenance, medical device safety recalls, maintains teaching simulations laboratories work stations, maintains equipment in student wet labs areas, 3D digital laboratories systems on a planned schedule for all clinical devices utilized for patient care on periodic timeline, maintaining adequate inventory of repair stocks parts, maintain the dental simulations DENTAROID teaching ROBOTs, dental sonograph system, patient Irrigation lasers, portable digital imaging scanners, surgical rooms anesthesia machines, 95+ digital x-ray machines, s, dental treatment units, patient vital signs monitors, and surgical reconstruction systems. In addition, the Biomedical Maintenance Technician: - Calibrate, inspect, and repair medical devices and technologies. - Ensure a high standard of performance of medical devices and systems through preventive or corrective maintenance checks or quality inspections. - Provide clinical staff with technical assistance and device training. - Monitors compliance with state and national regulations on medical equipment management. - Utilize digital meters, tools, and test equipment.   • Performs tasks involving the installation and maintenance of therapeutic, diagnostic, and monitoring medical equipment to include: - Provides equipment operators training o doctors, residents, students, and other staff on maintenance of equipment and preventive maintenance requirements. - Monitors regulatory compliance according to state and national requirements for CDM. - Performance of both routine and complex tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of clinical equipment including life support equipment. - Working independently in both routine and complex tasks. Being able to prioritize work and initiate new work and tasks. - Being able to effectively work with clinicians to troubleshoot clinical problems with medical equipment. - Providing training, mentoring and guidance for entry level technicians. - Participation in committees as requested. - Coordinate new equipment inspections and installation as needed. - Coordination and management of projects from start to completion, performing any necessary communication and follow-up with owner department. - Assisting with pre-purchase evaluations of equipment as required. - Participation in incident investigations as requested and provides follow-up to management. - Monitor Hazardous waste of electronic repair parts and coordinate proper turn-ins.   • Additional duties of a Biomedical Repair Technician: - Installing, maintaining, and repair medical equipment. - Attend technical training on the equipment to maintain critical technical skill level. - Cleaning and adjusting medical equipment. - Testing and calibrating equipment parts to determine what needs repair or replacement. - Prepares reports by analyzing and collecting data and trends. - Keeping records of all maintenance and repairs. - Evaluating service contracts. - Submit request for replacing medical equipment when necessary. - Using computers, software, and electronic tools to repair medical equipment. - Keeping a healthy safe work environment through safety tests, code compliance and infection control. - Keeping patient information confidential. - Performs other duties as assigned by department manager - Performs medical gases systems repairs for building med gas outlets, med gas distribution alarm system and maintain proper gas levels.   • Other related duties as specified by supervisor. - Monitor junior technicians work productivity, maintain preventive maintenance schedules for CDM medical/ dental equipment to preclude failure impacting patient care or student training. - Maintains Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) documentation for all services to include work orders, scheduled and unscheduled service orders and equipment upgrades. - Know our customers, assist our patient s when needed, coordinate any additional repairs such as water leaks through the Fix it works order submission and or call in the Facilities Response Center 24 Hour Operations when urgent. - Work with customers to ensure old equipment being replaced is prepared for surplus turn-ins. - Report critical faults that may impact patient care to supervisor and maintain vigilance of such situation. - Build pride in the team, share knowledge and skills to increase results in the organization.   • Is available to work weekends for assistance during special after-hours events such as State and SRTA/ ADEX Dental Board Examinations supplies supportive maintenance of equipment during boards. - Assist research dental lab with equipment design and compliance measures as needed. - Monitor dental unit waterline quality for patient safety and compliance IAW CDM, CDC, ADA requirements - Assist with coordination of CDM wide Water Quality dental water straws annual change-out in all dental unit. - Replace amalgam separator filter systems on dental units as needed. - Utilize computers, software, and electronic tools to repair medical equipment and or reprogram systems.. - Keep a healthy safe work environment through safety tests, code compliance and training others. - Maintain medical oxygen, vacuum, nitrous oxide manifolds, master alarm panels, med gas outlets IAW Joint Commission compliance. - Maintain radiation equipment registration with MUSC Radiation Safety Office and South Carolina Department of Health Education and Human Services (DEHEC)
  • Assist in managing the Dental Unit Waterline Testing Programs, pulling or coordinate sampling, retesting, coordinating with contractors and interpret water lab reports for Infection Control. - Assist in managing the Amalgam hazmat program and infection control programs. - Assist in managing the medical / dental devices life cycle management replacement program during student testing. - Assist in managing the medical gases programs. - Provide state or national examiners- key equipment setup an assist with critical students equipment repairs needed during the exams.
