About The Position

East Liberty Family Health Care Center is seeking a Billing Customer Service Specialist to serve as the primary point of contact for patient billing inquiries. This role requires medical billing experience and strong customer service skills to support patients with questions related to charges, insurance, statements, and account balances across multiple communication channels. This position is ideal for someone who understands medical billing workflows and enjoys helping patients navigate billing questions in a community health setting.

Requirements

  • Medical billing experience required (health center, hospital, or outpatient practice preferred)
  • Familiarity with insurance billing concepts including commercial insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to explain billing information clearly and compassionately
  • Experience working with EMRs and billing systems (eClinicalWorks preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple inquiries and prioritize tasks effectively

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an FQHC or community health setting
  • Knowledge of sliding fee discount programs
  • Prior experience handling patient billing escalations or customer service queues
  • Bilingual skills (if applicable for your patient population)

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary contact for patient billing inquiries received via voicemail, patient portal messaging, EMR tasks, and phone calls
  • Research and respond to questions related to: Insurance billing and claims Patient balances and statements Payments, adjustments, and account corrections Coverage, denials, and basic eligibility questions
  • Document all patient interactions and resolution steps accurately in the EMR and billing system
  • Coordinate with billing, front desk, and clinical teams to resolve complex or escalated inquiries
  • Assist patients with understanding financial policies, payment options, and sliding fee discounts as applicable
  • Identify recurring billing issues and communicate trends or concerns to billing leadership
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements at all times
