About The Position

Under the direction of the Senior Program Director, the Ballmer Summer Discovery Teacher is responsible for engaging with students in high quality activities to support them in achieving academic success, developing life skills and gaining new experiences and opportunities. The Ballmer Summer Discovery Teacher will focus on English Language Arts and Mathematics instruction and will offer students the opportunity to explore their interests, engage in their communities and discover their potential through robust enrichment and academic programming. This program provides fun learning experiences to support the whole child in their educational journey and life beyond the classroom.

Requirements

  • Valid Teacher certification meeting criteria established by the Michigan Department of Education, including retired teachers, is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution, or a student in the student teaching stage of their degree program is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working with middle or high school youth is required.
  • Knowledge of the resources, demographics, and culture of Detroit is strongly encouraged.
  • Strong listening skills and a desire to provide services to the community.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required before start of Summer Discovery Program.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with facilitating Lavinia curricula is preferred.
  • Training or education in youth care/development is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-person, high-quality and focused ELA and Mathematics instruction workshops following the Lavinia curriculum (training on curriculum will be provided).
  • Develop/facilitate workshop plans that align with the program's mission and goals (academic enrichment, life skills, service learning, leadership, etc.).
  • Apply intervention strategies that help meet the particular needs of youth and improve academic achievement.
  • Facilitate ELA/Mathematics level assessments, documenting and tracking scores.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and classroom records according to program requirements and engage in debriefing sessions for each activity/workshop.
  • Engage in regular contact with all youth and parents, providing support to meet their personal, physical, social and emotional needs.
  • Interact with all participants in a positive manner that reflects the mission of the YMCA.
  • Work cooperatively with youth, YMCA staff, and/or volunteers to plan community service projects and/or special events.
  • Assist in creating vivid and welcoming displays and classroom setup.
  • Promote a team concept through a positive approach to supervision, communication, and interactions.
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly staff meetings, professional development training and Ballmer Summer Discovery meetings.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
