This role ensures the proper handling, compression, labeling, and storage of recyclable waste for shipment while maintaining a clean and hazard-free work environment. The position reports to and performs work under the general direction of the Cutting Manager and Baler Lead.

Requirements

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing to communicate effectively and discern warning or emergency alarms, including forklift horns.
  • Sufficient vision to review and read documents, reports, and other job-related information, and observe signage in the plant
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to perform repetitive motions in fingering and hand/wrist/arm movements.
  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, and push/pull up to 75 lbs.; occasionally lift, carry, and push/pull up to 100 lbs. Work is performed between floor and shoulder height.
  • Ability to sit continuously for one hour or more during shift and sit for up to 2 cumulative hours.
  • Ability to stand continuously for one hour or more during shift and stand for up to 6 cumulative hours.
  • Ability to walk continuously for up to one hour during shift and to walk up to 3.00 cumulative hours for shift duration.
  • Sufficient body flexibility and balance which require repeated bending, twisting, and squatting motions. Ability to bend and twist at the head, neck and waist.
  • Ability to occasionally climbs stairs upon entering/leaving the facility
  • Sufficient attention to concentrate and complete tasks.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operational procedures and instructions, and policies.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a manufacturing setting preferred
  • Forklift experience is strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Operate baling machines to compress scrap cardboard and paper into compact bales for recycling or disposal.
  • Sort, collect, and transport scrap materials from production lines and departments to the baler area.
  • Empty carts from each department and load materials into the baler.
  • Secure and label bales according to facility procedures; band loads with wire and store for shipping.
  • Load bales into trucks for shipment and communicate with Waste Management regarding load pick-up schedules.
  • Drive forklifts to move bales and trash containers safely and efficiently.
  • Monitor equipment for proper operation; perform routine inspections and report malfunctions or maintenance needs.
  • Accurately track and record bale weights and overall trailer weights to ensure adhesion to standard practices with regards to maximum allowed trailer weight; forward weight records to the proper personnel.
  • Complete weekly TPM/PM (maintenance) on baler and shredder.
  • Demonstrate good mechanical aptitude and follow safe practices consistently.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment by regularly removing waste and debris from the baler area.
  • Perform all work in accordance with company policies, procedures, practices, values, and standards of conduct.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required between the assigned start time and end times of work; must be able to work overtime when required.
  • Follow safety procedures and practices to ensure a safe working environment for all employees
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Operate air stripping equipment to remove excess materials or separate stacked sheets after printing or die-cutting; use compressed air tools safely and effectively to assist with sheet separation or cleaning; inspect materials for quality issues such as misalignment, tears, or surface defects.
