The Back Office Technician is responsible for performing a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties. This role involves preparing patients for examination and assisting other optical professionals in providing treatment to the eyes. The technician ensures a positive and professional environment, collects and documents patient chief complaints, verifies ocular and medical health history, and records medications. They obtain and ensure patient consents are signed, perform refractions, administer basic Visual Acuity (VA) assessments, and conduct intraocular pressure (IOP) tests with a Tonopen unit. Additional duties include taking Fundus photos, administering Visual Field (VF) tests, performing Flourescein Angiogram (FA) and Indocyanine Green Angiography (ICG) procedures, and administering topical ophthalmic and dilation medications. The technician maintains clean, sterile, and stocked exam rooms, provides written instructions and patient education materials, and ensures patient understanding. Accurate documentation and summarization of ocular examinations are crucial, along with maintaining patient flow and communication regarding appointment status. They file patient forms and update information in the CareCoud/EMR system. In some clinics, driving patients in a company-provided vehicle may be required. The technician must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, keep commitments, inform their supervisor of progress, and ensure strict compliance with State, Federal, and other regulations (e.g., OSHA, WC, HIPAA, ADA, FEHA, DOL, HR policies and practices). Other duties may be assigned by management.
