Field test vehicles and equipment to ensure the repairs have been satisfactorily completed. Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Repair and maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks, small engines and heavy equipment.
  • Diagnostic equipment.
  • The use of repair manuals.
  • Purchasing rules and regulations.
  • All waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies.
  • Skills in: The use of hand tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Replacing, repairing and installing various components and accessories such as radios, heaters, windshield wipers, etc.
  • Documenting work performed and materials used on work orders.
  • Performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and various equipment.
  • Customer service.
  • Ability to: Operate motor vehicles.
  • Troubleshoot automotive and equipment problems.
  • Perform a variety of gasoline or diesel repair and maintenance.
  • Assist in body and fender repair work.
  • Lift 50 pounds, climb, squat, stoop, push, pull, crawl and bend.
  • Use appropriate safety equipment.
  • Work independently.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Perform minor welding.
  • Operate and perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections required on commercial motor vehicles (CMV) with gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 26,000 pounds or more after obtaining CDL instructional permit & license.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and two years of experience as a mechanic in passenger vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
  • An additional year of experience, for a total of three years experience, in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
  • Possess a valid Class “E” driver’s license and obtain a Class “B” CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled work in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment.
  • Field test vehicles and equipment to ensure the repairs have been satisfactorily completed.
  • Repair, change, and balance tires on automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance work to ensure that equipment is maintained and is in proper working order. Performs periodic maintenance, repair, and preparation of seasonal equipment.
  • Complies with all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies. Assists in the maintenance of proper documentation of all waste generation and disposal activities. Elevates questions/items of concern to Shop Manager.
  • Submits requests for parts and supplies.
  • Responsible for properly tracking and reporting time charged on various work activities and completing shop work orders.
  • Responds to emergency road service calls and perform minor repairs to vehicles and equipment. Cleans up after repairs and return tools to their proper location.
  • Performs minor welding, paint and body repairs as needed.
  • Instructs other mechanics or helpers in the repair of automobiles, trucks, and other equipment.
