BD Diagnostic is seeking a field-based Automation Service Engineer to provide on-site support at various customer locations throughout the Chicago IL region. This position is responsible for managing the success of the relationship with an assigned set of customers in order to achieve the goals and objectives identified by the customer and BD. The individual will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, resolving or raising customer struggles. In addition, the individual will act as customer advocate and liaison back into the BD organization. This position is also responsible for providing on-site support to BD Lab Automation customers, including installation, corrective maintenance, preventative maintenance, removals, and other support as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field (Electrical, Electronics, Informatics, Mechatronics, or Biomedical) or 10+ years of equivalent experience, with strong understanding of electronics, electro-mechanical devices, PLCs, pneumatics, and intermediate knowledge of networking architecture and computer operating systems.
  • Proficiency in software installations and upgrades, understanding of basic computer security concepts, ability to communicate with IT personnel, and skills to complete routine software maintenance while demonstrating excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills coupled with outstanding customer service abilities and attention to detail, enabling effective interaction with clients and internal teams.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with at least 3 years of driving history, be available to work flexible hours, travel up to 50% of time outside home geographic area, and be on call as needed to meet business demands.
  • Ability to lift up to 30lbs frequently and 70lbs infrequently, handle standing/bending/stooping for up to 10 hours, push/pull materials up to 100lbs, and adhere to all company Personal Protective Equipment standards and guidelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in Robotics with demonstrated proficiency in installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of sophisticated instrumentation over a 10+ year career in technical fields.
  • Proven experience working with highly complex robotic systems and automated equipment in technical environments.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and database management capabilities.
  • Technical certifications including A+, Microsoft, or Cisco accreditations considered advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply technical expertise to solve complex problems and maintain operational excellence of robotic systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide onsite support for installation and service of sophisticated diagnostic laboratory automation instrumentation with minimal supervision, respond to emergency customer requests via dispatch, and complete work according to ISO and GMP standards while maintaining professional appearance and adhering to regulatory requirements including HIPPA, OSHA, and FDA.
  • Deliver clear, timely, and effective communications to customers regarding service expectations, arrival times, ongoing service activities, and follow-up calls in support of BD Customer Experience initiatives, while also properly reporting and documenting all customer complaints in appropriate systems for resolution and investigation.
  • Utilize advanced troubleshooting techniques and analytical thinking skills to diagnose hardware/software issues, determine corrective actions, complete system repairs, upgrade systems for software compatibility, and work independently using schematics, diagrams, service manuals and other documentation.
  • Play an active role in maintaining and implementing service documentation, provide feedback to improve documentation efficiency, complete service documentation per GMP requirements, finish administrative requirements within expected timeframes, and participate in vendor credentialing programs to maintain access to customer facilities.
  • Manage trunk stock inventory within established limits, maintain calibrated test equipment and tools in good working condition, demonstrate good judgment in company credit card usage while adhering to expense guidelines, and properly maintain company vehicle according to fleet contractor requirements including service maintenance, cleanliness, and organization.
