This Audiology Fellowship in Amplification at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) in Nashville, TN, is a competitive, compensated, full-time, one-year post-doctoral program. It provides advanced training in hearing aid services, amplification technologies, and hearing loss management, combined with hands-on participation in clinical and translational research within an academic medical center setting. This fellowship is ideal for audiologists seeking advanced specialization in amplification, hearing aids, and hearing science, while maintaining an employment-based clinical role at VUMC. The program duration is one calendar year (July 1 – June 30) and is set in an academic medical center and outpatient audiology clinics. The fellowship blends clinical audiology practice, didactic education, and hearing research. Fellows may audit up to three graduate-level Amplification coursework sequences completed by Au.D. students as part of their advanced training. The position also involves providing evaluation, treatment and counsel of patients with hearing and vestibular disorders to improve communication function and postural stability, with a focused effort on vestibular with some audio diagnostics. The fellow will initiate collaboration with the health care team to meet patient care, outcomes and system improvement objectives and increase the visibility of the department and profession through activities that occur in the state, region, nation and world.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.)
  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A)
  • Eligibility for Tennessee Audiology licensure (must be obtained prior to start date)

Responsibilities

  • Provides evaluation, treatment and counsel of patients with hearing and vestibular disorders to improve communication function and postural stability.
  • Focused effort is on vestibular with some audio diagnostics.
  • Initiates collaboration with health care team to meet patient care, outcomes and system improvement objectives.
  • Increase the visibility of the department and profession through activities that occur in the state, region, nation and world.
  • Evaluation, fitting, verification, and follow-up of hearing aids.
  • Delivery of amplification services across VUMC main campus and satellite clinics (including Franklin, TN).
  • Progressive transition to independent clinical practice based on competency.
  • Assignment of a scheduled clinical template upon approval for independent practice.
  • Limited scheduled time providing additional audiology services, as appropriate.
  • Participate in clinical and translational hearing research focused on amplification outcomes and listening performance.
  • Participation in ongoing hearing aid and amplification research protocols.
  • Development of Fellow-initiated research projects.
  • Data collection and analysis within dedicated hearing research facilities.
  • Co-author at least one manuscript submitted to a peer-reviewed journal during the fellowship year.
  • Guest lecturing in the audiology academic program.
  • Presentation of research at regional or national audiology conferences.
  • Completes full diagnostic hearing and vestibular assessments using the appropriate testing method and equipment for the patient type, diagnosis, and reason for referral.
  • Formulates and/or implements a treatment plan to address deficits and patient/family areas of concern.
  • Completes documentation in a timely manner.
  • Provides education/consultation to patient, family, health care team and community.
  • Enhances and impacts our knowledge of the nature of communicative and vestibular disorders.
