About The Position

Assist the Director in the recruitment, coordination and planning of all activities offered within Dallas County jail facilities, including education programs such as GED, ESL, colleges and vocation schools, religious services to include all denominations, substance abuse, alcohol abuse, HIV, and parenting programs and services. Management Scope: Supervises Video Manager and Video Technician, and coordinates with up to 15 Detention Service Officers.

Requirements

  • Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a job-related field of study.
  • Three (3) years of professional social services work related experience, which includes one (1) year supervisory experience.
  • Must possess a valid, Class C, Texas Driver’s License, and good driving record.
  • Mandatory drug testing prior to employment, and will be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with inmates in a secured environment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as liaison in coordinating services and activities in the following areas, to include supervision and coordination of staff:
  • Identifies Service Organizations: Meets with various community non-profits to determine appropriate programming and services offered. Confirms good standing status of 501 (c-3) non profits by obtaining references of other agencies that have used their services.
  • Coordinates Volunteers Coordinates advertisement and recruitment for new program Meets with groups of volunteers that will provide classes and workshops and reviews proposed curriculums Conducts criminal background checks on all volunteers and provides orientation that will include communicating all jail policies, dress codes, and general conduct.
  • Coordinates Religious Service Providers and Materials Meets with religious leaders of all denominations who wish to volunteer their services and/or hold religious classes or services Coordinates with religious service officers to determine appropriate available space for classes or services Conducts criminal background checks before granting entry into any of the inmate facilities Reviews and supervises the distribution of religious materials Coordinates the distribution of religious material requests by inmates Responds and coordinates grievances regarding religious services and/or religious reading materials, audio, and video
  • Coordinates Educational Services Strategizes with colleges and school districts to establish the most effective educational program for inmates Conducts orientation to educational instructors who have been assigned to the jail education program Coordinates with Classification to relocate inmates to education housing unit if they have been approved for classes Provides smooth coordination between jail staff and educational instructors Responds to inmate grievance based on denial of educational classes Generally oversees classroom instruction to ensure the appropriateness and effectiveness of educational materials
  • Coordinates Closed Circuit TV Programming Ensures a broad range of religious programming through the inmates closed circuit TV Arranges for the Video Manager and Video Technician to shoot footage of the Commissioners Court meetings on a weekly basis Ensures Commissioners Court recorded meetings are received by the Court in a timely manner Provides oversight of inmates TV repair by checking the web for repair requests and timely completion of services Provides approval for other divisions who need the assistance of video services Review videos for updated information regarding hygiene, sanitation, and visitation
  • Coordinates Law Libraries and Indigent Programs Arranges for officers to provide updated legal material for inmates’ use Coordinates with George Allen Law Library to receive up-to-date legal changes in Texas Penal Code Coordinates with law library officers who respond to inmate requests to visit the law library Provides daily indigent list to the law library Orders supplies for indigent inmates from the US Post Office Ensures law library officers are distributing appropriate supplies to indigent inmates as requested Responds to grievances from inmates regarding supplies request
  • General Administration Briefs Director and Chiefs on new programs and gains approval from the Sheriff Briefs Jail Captains and coordinates a multipurpose room for conducting offered programs
  • Performs other duties as required
