We are looking for an Associate Underwriting Consultant to join our Individual Underwriting team! This position is critical to Equitable’s success. Requirements

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills supported by sound medical knowledge
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong product knowledge and the ability to effectively share expertise with others in a collaborative team environment
  • A proactive, service‑oriented, and results‑focused approach
  • Ability to deliver accurate and timely underwriting decisions, ensuring prompt responses to agents and brokers
  • Strong underwriting customer service skills, recognizing that inaccurate or unclear communication can cause policy issuance delays and negatively impact agent confidence and business relationships
  • Experience consulting with the Medical Director and reinsurers on complex or unusual medical risks, ensuring the company’s risk exposure remains appropriate
  • Commitment to professional development—both self‑development and the development of peers—through seminars, conferences, industry publications, and formal education
  • FLMI or FALU designation, or active progress toward one of these designations
  • Consistent accountability for quality and volume of work, demonstrated through positive audit results
  • Completion of a minimum of 25 hours per year of continuing education to stay current with medical knowledge and industry underwriting trends

Responsibilities

  • Assess mortality and financial risk for individual life insurance applications through detailed analysis of medical, lifestyle, and financial information
  • Collaborate with reinsurance partners to appropriately distribute risk for cases exceeding retention limits
  • Coach and mentor junior, intermediate and/or senior underwriters from a technical perspective to ensure underwriting decisions are well‑reasoned, timely, and effectively communicated to stakeholders
  • Demonstrate strong negotiation skills when working with reinsurers, advisors, and internal partners to achieve optimal underwriting outcomes
  • Actively contribute as a team member and lead assigned projects, supporting continuous improvement and operational excellence
