About The Position

The Senior Underwriting Consultant plays a critical role in managing advanced financial analysis and underwriting for large group commercial customers, supporting both Fully Insured and Self‑Insured business, with Self‑Insured products representing a key component of the role. In this position, you will apply advanced underwriting risk assessment and pricing expertise to develop sound pricing decisions, evaluate complex risks, and project future costs for both new business and renewal accounts. This role partners closely with Medica Sales to provide clear pricing rationale and to help craft renewal and sales strategies that balance customer objectives with Medica’s long‑term financial goals. The Senior Underwriting Consultant is expected to exercise independent judgment, influence outcomes, and serve as a trusted underwriting resource in a competitive market.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7+ years of professional experience in underwriting or a related field.
  • Significant underwriting experience within the healthcare insurance industry.
  • Demonstrated experience underwriting large group commercial business, including Self‑Insured products.
  • Advanced experience using group claims and experience reporting to assess risk and forecast future claim costs.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience underwriting both Fully Insured and Self‑Insured large group business, with deep expertise in Self‑Insured products.
  • Experience leading or supporting large‑scale Medical and Pharmacy RFPs.
  • Advanced knowledge of self‑insured funding arrangements, stop‑loss concepts, and complex plan designs.
  • Recognized as a trusted underwriting resource or subject matter expert.
  • Rx RFP experience is preferred
  • Extensive experience working with claims and experience reporting for projecting future risk
  • Ability to make decisions and review complex policy arrangements

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead underwriter for assigned large group commercial opportunities across Fully Insured and Self‑Insured products, with a primary focus on Self‑Insured arrangements, including new business and renewals.
  • Perform advanced financial analysis and risk assessment using group census data, historical claims, and experience reporting to project future claim costs.
  • Serve as underwriting lead on large and complex RFPs, including Medical RFPs with pharmacy (Rx) components; pharmacy RFP experience preferred.
  • Develop, evaluate, and recommend pricing strategies and funding approaches for complex plan designs and non‑standard arrangements.
  • Collaborate with Sales and Account Management to support negotiations, finalist presentations, and renewal strategy development.
  • Clearly communicate underwriting rationale, risks, and recommendations to internal stakeholders and, as appropriate, to brokers and employer groups.
  • Apply strong business judgment to make sound, independent decisions and escalate risks or issues appropriately.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for large group and self‑insured underwriting, providing guidance to peers and contributing to best practices.
  • Maintain awareness of competitive market trends, industry developments, and regulatory considerations impacting large group underwriting.
