About The Position

Under the support of the District Ombudsperosn, provides services and referrals to help prevent, identify, manage and/or resolve workplace conflict. Assists with mediation, neutral facilitation and negotiation while honoring the critical elements of an ombudsperson practice, which encompasses confidential, impartial, independent, non-retaliatory, fair and ethical facilitation of the problem-solving process. Guides or coaches individuals to deal directly with other parties, including the use of formal resolution resources of the organization, and helps individuals improve their skill and confidence in giving voice to their concerns directly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree minimum
  • Three to Five years of progressively responsible experience in an organized setting required, with experience in the following human resource areas: employee relations, employment law, investigation, alternative dispute resolution and arbitration, mediation
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures and the ability to effectively collaborate with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Strong conflict resolution skills, including mediation process skills, and the ability to exercise impartiality
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, methods and techniques in area of specialty
  • Strong active listening, interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to use independent judgement
  • Ability to effectively develop and deliver employee training and orientation
  • Assessment, referral and advocacy skills
  • Manages confidential information with a high level of integrity

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a neutral, independent, informal and confidential resource for those who are seeking assistance to resolve questions and concerns affecting their relations with peers or the organization
  • Under the direction of the Ombudsperson, provides support and acts as a designated resource for individuals and groups engaged in addressing workplace conflict, issues or concerns informally
  • Listens to clients, assesses situations and guides individuals toward effective problem resolutions and options and directs employees towards expert support
  • Helps shape training programs and workplace resources to promote constructive communication, conflict resolution and collaborative problem solving to individuals, groups, managers and leaders
  • Develops resources and tools to aid the District in fostering a culture of respect, collaboration and problem resolution
  • Assists in surfacing issues to formal resolution channels; when an individual is unable or unwilling to surface a concern directly, assists by helping give voice to the concern and /or creating an awareness of the issue among appropriate decision-makers in the organization
  • Informs the Ombudsperson of patterns of complaints or abuse and workforce trends that HR may be able to address
  • Maintains confidential records; may assist with reporting
