About The Position

The Head of Archives & Special Collections is responsible for the management of the historical Molloy collections and will oversee the continued growth and ongoing preservation of the physical, digital and special collections maintained by the library. They will provide archival research, instruction, and programing in line with the library’s outreach and advocacy efforts to showcase these collections to engage students, faculty, and the greater Molloy community.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree (ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS)
  • Certificate in Archives and Records Management
  • 5 to 8 years of work related experience
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
  • Alma, Digital Commons and other proprietary archival tools and platforms

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the library’s archives and special collections perform properly and add value to our patrons by: Assesses, acquires, processes, and preserves both physical and digital materials that document Molloy University.
  • Maximizing collection visibility by integrating with library systems (e.g. Alma, DigitalCommons, and other archival platforms e.g., ArchivesSpace, Preservia) and preparing finding aids in accordance with national archival and metadata standards (e.g. EAD and Dublin Core).
  • Designs and implements policies and workflows for collection development, digital preservation, metadata creation, and access to maintain archival standards and best practices.
  • Oversees digitization initiatives and advances online access projects via digital repositories, partner websites, and digital exhibits.
  • Assumes a leading role in the execution of oral history projects including conducting interviews, completing transcriptions, creating ingest packages for collection management system and creation of catalog entries and collection access points.
  • Preparing annual statistic reports about archival collections, services, and usage.
  • Working with the Associate Director, Head of Electronic and Digital Services to establish and/or review any archive-related policies and procedures Collaborating with other library teams on usability, accessibility, and assessment projects relating to digital collections
  • Assisting with the open access institutional repository, i.e., DigitalCommons@Molloy
  • Responding to research requests and information inquiries specific to archives and/or special collections.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Performs related outreach, promotion and campus engagement by:
  • Engaging students, faculty, staff and alumni in collaborative projects that preserve, document and share Molloy's history
  • Working with other Molloy departments, programs and offices to support anniversaries, events and publications relating to significant historical milestones.
  • Developing and maintaining virtual exhibitions, mobile apps and audio tours that highlight events, institutional history and collection holdings.
  • Coordinating with the Outreach Librarian in the promotion of archives and/or special collections related exhibits and events, including web page updates and libguides, managing events calendars and schedules
  • Promoting the archives and special collections to students and faculty, collaborating with faculty to support the inclusion of special collections-based co-curricular programs and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Fulfills the essential functional expectations for all academic librarians by:
  • Maintaining a high level of proficiency in all library databases, resources and archival systems; learning new technologies or resources and adapting to new methodologies as required
  • Remaining current with developments in librarianship, seeking ongoing professional development opportunities on a continual basis
  • Other duties as assigned
