About The Position

National Audubon Society is looking for an attorney to join a service-oriented Office of General Counsel (OGC). The Associate General Counsel will work closely with the General Counsel and the rest of the in-house legal team to provide high-level legal advice across the broad spectrum of practice areas routinely encountered by a complex, international mission-driven conservation organization. The Associate General Counsel (AGC) will support the General Counsel and the Audubon Legal Department, providing legal and management advice and counsel across the corporation. This position is classified as hybrid, in accordance with Audubon’s “Where We Work” Policy. Hybrid employees are expected to work in an Audubon office every Monday and Tuesday and an additional two days each month of the employee’s choosing. Candidates should be located within commuting distance of Audubon's New York, NY office.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree and 3-5 years of experience. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will also be considered.
  • Experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts, settlements, and other legal documents preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one area of preferred legal specialization. Multiple areas of expertise a plus.
  • High ethical standards and demonstrated work ethic.
  • Excellent listening, oral, and written skills.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent judgment.
  • Belief in Audubon’s mission a plus.

Responsibilities

  • In consultation with other lawyers in the OGC, provide advice and counsel on a wide variety of legal matters for all departments of Audubon.
  • Review and negotiate contracts and other complex agreements.
  • Leverage expertise in one or more areas of legal specialization, which might include: Compliance Program/Risk Management; Contracts; Grants; Corporate/Governance/Non-Profit; Development/Fundraising; Labor and Employment; Environmental Law; Intellectual Property; International Operations; Real Estate and Construction; Litigation; Lobbying Compliance and Political Activity; Privacy/Data Protection; or Risk Management.
  • Engage in continuous learning to deepen and broaden legal expertise.
  • Prepare materials for Board and Board committees as needed.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with staff from all departments of the organization.
  • Handle administrative tasks associated with the position.
  • Attend regular General Counsel team meetings and participate in setting agendas and presenting topics.
  • Mentor Legal Coordinator as needed
  • Develop and engage in leadership opportunities and be an ambassador for Audubon’s policies, values, competencies and Code of Conduct.
  • Maintain and foster culture of safety.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
