About The Position

We are looking for an Associate General Counsel to join our growing team! In this position, you will play a critical role within Brightspeed’s legal team, reporting directly to the Senior Associate General Counsel – Network, Real Estate & Procurement. You will serve as the primary legal advisor to the network operations and government affairs teams, providing strategic counsel focusing on franchise agreements, pole attachment/joint use agreements and management, regulatory compliance, dispute management, and supporting the local government affairs team. This role offers a unique opportunity for a versatile attorney to work across multiple functions. You will engage directly with senior leadership and collaborate across the organization to ensure business initiatives are executed with legal integrity and strategic alignment.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • 10+ years of legal experience with a significant portion of that time spent advising clients in the telecommunications industry or a closely related field
  • In-depth knowledge of telecommunications law, including regulatory and transactional matters
  • Proven experience drafting and negotiating real estate and procurement contracts and agreements
  • Success in this role will be measured by the ability to reduce permitting timelines, streamline contracting cycles, and accelerate fiber deployment milestones
  • Strong experience in dispute resolution & developing creative compromises
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with senior leadership and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a focus on pragmatic, business-minded solutions
  • Collaborative, solutions-oriented approach and a proactive mindset

Responsibilities

  • Licensing and Permitting: Support and ensure compliance with applicable licenses, permits, and regulatory approvals needed to operate in various jurisdictions.
  • Contract Negotiation and Drafting: Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including franchise agreements, pole attachment/joint use agreements, and general agreements with municipal and external infrastructure organizations.
  • Dispute Resolution: Manage and oversee the company’s disputes related to its fiber build, including disputes related to telecommunications services, contracts, and regulatory compliance. Work closely with outside counsel as needed.
  • Risk Management: Provide advice on risk management strategies, identifying potential legal risks, and recommending steps to mitigate them.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Collaborate with internal departments, including regulatory affairs, government relations, and business development teams, to align legal strategies with business goals. Support local government affairs teams with municipal relations.
  • Policy Advocacy: Assist in the development of internal policies and participate in advocacy efforts on telecommunications-related legislative and regulatory matters.
  • Additional Duties: Performs other duties as required to support the business and evolving organization, which may include support procurement.
