As Builders Mutual enters its next phase of growth—focused on underwriting excellence, scalability, and long-term performance—we are seeking a dynamic leader to serve as our Assistant Vice President, Technical Underwriting Office. Reporting to Mike Hickman, VP of Underwriting, this Raleigh, North Carolina–based hybrid role will serve as a trusted advisor and key member of the underwriting leadership team, helping build the infrastructure, governance, and leadership capability needed to scale the organization. Partnering closely across underwriting, actuarial, and business teams, this leader will drive modernization, strengthen consistency and confidence in underwriting decisions, and develop the next generation of underwriting leaders. Success will be measured through improved speed, clarity, and discipline—positioning the organization to grow with agility and confidence.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of Property & Casualty insurance experience with Bachelor’s degree
  • 10+ years of leadership experience, including at least 5 years leading leaders.
  • Deep technical expertise in underwriting, including risk selection, pricing, portfolio management, and governance.
  • Proven ability to balance growth and profitability while managing risk at scale.
  • Experience partnering with actuarial, claims, and business leaders to drive performance outcomes.
  • Demonstrated success leading and developing high-performing teams.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional communication and executive presence, with a proven ability to influence, align, and lead across all levels of the organization.

  • Strong understanding of construction or contractor-focused insurance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and evolve technical underwriting strategy, ensuring alignment with business goals, risk appetite, and profitability targets.
  • Establish and strengthen underwriting guidelines, authority frameworks, and governance to drive consistency and discipline.
  • Partner with actuarial, finance, and business leaders to monitor portfolio performance, pricing adequacy, and loss trends—translating insights into action.
  • Drive underwriting modernization efforts, improving processes, tools, and systems to enhance efficiency and decision-making.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on complex or high-risk accounts, ensuring sound underwriting judgment.
  • Develop and coach underwriting leaders, strengthening capability, accountability, and bench strength across the organization.
  • Advance data-driven underwriting practices, leveraging analytics to improve performance and outcomes.
  • Collaborate across teams to align underwriting strategy with customer needs and overall business performance.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal underwriting standards.
