UMCU is currently searching for a bright, professional and friendly Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Information Technology who provides visionary leadership and strategic direction for the Credit Union’s Information Technology function. This role is responsible for overseeing all IT operations, systems development, programming, infrastructure, and cybersecurity initiatives. The AVP partners closely with the CTO to drive innovation, modernize technology platforms, and align IT strategy with the Credit Union’s long-term business objectives. This position plays a critical leadership role in cultivating a high-performing IT team, advancing secure and scalable technology solutions, and ensuring reliable, compliant, and forward-looking systems that enhance member experience and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years management and related experience; preferably with financial institution with $500 million to $1 billion in assets or the equivalent size company in another industry
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills

Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Strategy Partner with the CTO to lead, mentor, and develop IT management and staff, including hiring, performance management, coaching, succession planning, and professional development.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement within the Information Technology department.
  • Ensure the IT department operates efficiently, effectively, and in alignment with the Credit Union’s strategic goals.
  • Support the development and execution of the Credit Union’s technology roadmap, establishing clear objectives that enable growth, scalability, and innovation.
  • Innovation & Technology Advancement Drive research, assessment, and adoption of emerging technologies—including Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning, cloud platforms, data analytics, and fintech solutions —by engaging with industry conferences, vendor partnerships, publications, professional associations, and peer networks.
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend innovative technology solutions that improve internal operations and enhance member experience.
  • Oversee end-to-end delivery of AI, cloud, and analytics initiatives , from concept development, vendor selection, integration, and production rollout.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, and risk assessments for new and emerging technologies.
  • Systems, Security & Risk Management Oversee the administration, security, and performance of the Credit Union’s network and systems infrastructure.
  • Establish, implement, and maintain comprehensive IT policies, procedures, and standards supporting AI governance, cloud security, data management, and regulatory compliance .
  • Lead cybersecurity and information security initiatives, ensuring robust protection of members and organizational data.
  • Oversee data governance, analytics platforms, and reporting capabilities , ensuring data quality, availability, and secure use for operational insights and decision-making.
  • Maintain and protect system backups and oversee disaster recovery and business continuity planning across on-prem and cloud environments.
  • Ensure information security coverage during evening and weekend operations as required.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for cloud vendor selection, contract negotiation, and migration strategies , ensuring scalability, resilience, security, and cost optimization.
  • Financial & Vendor Management Support the development and management of the annual IT budget, ensuring responsible stewardship of resources.
  • Oversee hardware and technology acquisitions to ensure cost-effectiveness, compatibility, and alignment with business needs.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with technology vendors, external auditors, and regulatory examiners.
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with external technology partners and service providers.
  • Lead negotiations with vendor partners to establish mutually beneficial terms and conditions, ensuring favorable contractual arrangements.
  • Collaboration & Community Engagement Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure systems meet operational needs and support a positive team members and members’ experience.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key member organizations, including the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, and Washtenaw Community College.
  • Represent the Credit Union at internal and external meetings, training sessions, industry events, and community functions.
  • Serve as a volunteer and ambassador within the University of Michigan, Washtenaw Community College, and Ann Arbor communities.
  • Support onboarding and integration of new team members as needed.
  • Compliance & Governance Maintain knowledge of and ensure adherence to all applicable Credit Union policies and regulatory requirements, including BSA, OFAC, USA PATRIOT Act, AML, SAFE Act, CFPB regulations, and Customer Identification Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of organizational goals.
