About The Position

This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing a variety of programs and activities for individuals with disabilities.NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville and meet the needs of the organization, which may result in the assignment of other duties and take precedence over duties described in this job description. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Six (6) months of experience volunteering or working with Special Olympics.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license, or any valid driver's license with ability to obtain a North Carolina driver's license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.
  • Attend the new coordinator orientation training provided by Special Olympics North Carolina and Annual Leadership Conference within 12 months of hire date.
  • General knowledge of the principles, rules, materials, and equipment required in a variety of recreational activities.
  • General knowledge of the philosophy, objectives, psychology, sociology, and personal health and hygiene of public recreation.
  • General knowledge of appropriate activities and programs that best serve people with disabilities.
  • General knowledge of the practices, rules, and regulations of Special Olympics Iredell County, Special Olympics Incorporated, and Special Olympics North Carolina.
  • Working knowledge of the theory and philosophy of recreation and its application to individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and rules as it pertains to the Special Olympics.
  • Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and files.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, volunteers, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support to the Special Olympics Iredell County (SOIC) coordinator.
  • Facilitates participation for all citizens with disabilities within a designated geographic area in the local SOIC programs.
  • Recruits, trains, and oversees volunteers involved in SOIC sports, competitions, and additional programs.
  • Ensures volunteers receive proper training and submits necessary screening documentation to Special Olympics North Carolina.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of facilities for sports events, competitions, and other activities; enforces rules and regulations to maintain order and discipline during events.
  • Upholds the mission and objectives of Special Olympics Incorporated and North Carolina, ensuring adherence to their policies and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate records and submits all required documentation promptly to the appropriate authorities.
  • Operates the activity van for various events as needed.
  • Responds to inquiries received via social media and local communication channels.
  • Manages the SOIC Instagram account.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
