About The Position

The School of Visual Arts (SoVA) in the College of Arts and Architecture at The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State, University Park campus) invites candidates to apply for a position in Art Education at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor of Art Education. This position is a full-time, 36-week, nine-month, non-tenure track faculty appointment funded for one year. The anticipated start date is in August 2026. Full university benefits apply. The Art Education program's current focus is on transdisciplinary approaches to visual culture, childhood and youth studies, digital and media arts studies, feminist and critical pedagogies, critical race theory, histories of art education, curriculum studies, critical disability studies, environmental studies, cultural and diaspora studies, art teacher education, studio experience, arts-based research, and contemporary theories in creative practice and learning.

Requirements

  • PhD in Art Education or a related discipline is required at the time of appointment.
  • Broad knowledge of contemporary and historical Art Education scholarship, as well as media and techniques used in the field.
  • Experience fostering creativity and critical approaches to visual culture and creative expression.
  • Evidence of equitable considerations, awareness, and practice regarding contemporary curricula development, inclusive practices in educating all students and working with all faculty and staff, along with evidence of working collectively to cultivate a culture that supports success and enables all members of a college community to thrive.

Nice To Haves

  • College-level teaching experience (minimum two semester-equivalent).
  • Successful experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate art education students.
  • Experience teaching in PreK-12 schools, community-based organizations, or cultural institutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the program’s collective values of sensitivity to equity and inclusion for everyone and its mission of social responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching up to three undergraduate courses in Art Education each semester, guiding students through a diverse range of ideas, materials, and processes to promote both creative and intellectual growth.
  • Providing mentorship and evaluation for students, supporting student professional development within the field of art education, and overseeing independent studies.
  • Participating in area programming to foster a supportive and constructive learning atmosphere.
  • Contributing to the Art Education Program and the School of Visual Arts through participation in service roles, as assigned/needed.
