About The Position

The University of Rhode Island is a medium-sized public university located near the southern end of Rhode Island in picturesque New England. The main campus is located in Kingston, an established, family-friendly, small community only five miles from Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Rhode Island's proximity to the ocean moderates its weather compared to other New England States. The region offers excellent outdoor recreational activities, good public-school systems, and ready access by car or public transportation to Providence, Boston, New Haven, and the New York City metropolitan areas and airports. Position Summary: Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor. This is a one- year position with possibility of renewal in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematical Sciences at the University of Rhode Island to begin Fall 2026. We are seeking to attract a diverse pool of job applicants for this position. The department has 16 research faculty members, 8 teaching faculty members, and 16 graduate teaching assistants. We offer programs leading to BA, BS, MS, and PhD degrees in mathematics, with applied mathematics options at all levels. We co-govern the Data Science Program, which houses a BA, BS, online graduate certificate, and online MS degree. The interdisciplinary nature of our department will provide the new faculty member with opportunities to interact with a broad range of colleagues in areas such as Oceanography, Computer Science, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, and Life Sciences.

Requirements

  • Master's or PhD in Mathematics or related field by the time of appointment, (August 2026).
  • Experience teaching college level mathematics courses.
  • Ability to become an effective teacher of mathematics at the undergraduate level.
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in written communication skills.
  • Ability to engage students in the classroom.
  • Ability to make effective use of technology.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in mathematics or related field.
  • Evidence of ability to teach courses above freshman level.
  • Interest in pedagogical methods for improving student success in undergraduate mathematics courses.
  • Experience in course or project development.

Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities may include teaching a variety of undergraduate courses
  • coordinating multi-section courses
  • teaching large size classes
  • teaching general education courses aimed at students throughout the campus
  • course and project development
  • Course development involves preparing exams and syllabi, maintaining online resources and participation in all aspects of the assessment cycle for courses.
  • The course load is 24 credits per year with a mixture of 3-credit and 4-credit courses.
  • teaching faculty are expected to participate in department service activities as they pertain to their normal instructional responsibilities
