About The Position

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibility for overall management of a staff of engineers, technicians and other personnel who are responsible for providing engineering expertise, guidance and technical assistance to state agencies, consultants, and the public. They are differentiated from lower levels in the Professional Engineer job family in that their focus is on broader supervisory and management issues including planning, organizing, and integrating the functions that report to them. This is the traffic division assistant which is vital to ensuring key functions to the division are completed. This position will develop, conduct, and administer transportation programs within Traffic Division in accordance with agencies' policies, priorities, and budget constraints. (I.E., planning and analytics, design contracts, safety analysis and collision data, work zone audits, field data collection, force account school zone program, speed zone modifications, approved products list, sign shop, special signage programs, ancillary structure inspection, Work Zone Safe coordination, TR safety project management from initiation to completion of construction.) This position will manage and/or develop budgets for projects and programs, including operating requirements and equipment and material purchases, and ensure that actual expenses are consistent with the approved budget (Sign shop operations, TR safety projects, special signage projects, statewide contract scopes, force account school zone program). This position will also help develop and maintain a 5-year work plan for Traffic's HSIP projects. This position will also help continue to develop a new signal maintenance team and a work zone team (managing smart work zones, zipper merges, variable speed limits, work zone audits, and transportation management plans).

Requirements

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Three years of supervisory experience in a professional engineering related field.
  • Knowledge of engineering practices, principles and systems

  • Ability to design and implement engineering activities

  • Persons appointed to engineering manager positions must possess or obtain registration as a professional engineer with the Oklahoma State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors within six (6) months from the date of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Selects, develops and motivates subordinate staff to ensure that resources are available to provide quality services and on-time performance for the agency or unit supported
  • Plans, organizes and manages the work of subordinate staff in the assigned unit to ensure that the work is accomplished consistent with agency requirements.
  • Directs engineering activities of all or part of an agency's responsibility; e.g., section, branch, division, etc.
  • Develops and conducts a specific work program within an agency in accordance with agencies' policies, priorities and budget constraints.
  • Manages and/or develops budgets for an assigned unit including operating requirements and equipment and material purchases and ensures that actual expenses are consistent with the approved budget.
  • Represents the department in contacts with the general public and public officials, answering questions and resolving complaints.
  • Oversees consulting engineer's contracts and provides technical oversight.
  • Develop, conduct, and administer transportation programs within Traffic Division in accordance with agencies' policies, priorities, and budget constraints.
  • Manage and/or develop budgets for projects and programs, including operating requirements and equipment and material purchases, and ensure that actual expenses are consistent with the approved budget
  • Help develop and maintain a 5-year work plan for Traffic's HSIP projects.
