About The Position

Provide assistance to the Public Safety Manager in the operations and supervision of the Public Safety Patrol. Ensure District wide coverage by patrol staff by scheduling work shifts to cover every day of the year with 24-hour-a-day coverage. Serve as liaison between the District, City of Des Moines Police and Fire and Rescue departments during times the Public Safety Specialist is not on duty. Assess physical security at schools to ensure security for students, staff and community members. This position requires continuous use of independent judgment. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the district.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, HiSet or GED
  • Three (3) years security, law enforcement or fire operations experience
  • Valid driver’s license and compliance with the District’s required Motor Vehicle Records guidelines
  • City of Des Moines fire extinguisher certification license or willingness and ability to obtain within six months of start date.
  • Ability to operate a security camera system.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools.
  • National Incident Management System Command training or willingness to obtain within six months of start date.
  • Competency working in a culturally diverse environment.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading or assisting with security communication in the case of a district emergency and working with city and county emergency personnel, as needed.
  • Back up contact (liaison) for administrators, community, law enforcement, fire department, employees and school board as needed.
  • Inform Director of Facilities and Public Safety Manager of day-to-day incidents that may require communication to the Superintendent’s office, District Leadership or the public.
  • Supervision of staff, including work assignments and work hours; not limited to maintaining schedules to maximize coverage during peak hours and/or emergency situations.
  • Provide annual evaluations for Public Safety employees per District guidelines.
  • Ability to understand and operate district security cameras and card access systems to protect District facilities.
  • Make recommendations on future needs and changes to the systems.
  • Provide ongoing security reports as requested by the Public Safety Manager and/or Director of Facilities.
  • Assess and monitor on-going security needs of the department and District; make recommendations on an ongoing basis to stay aligned with the department’s goals and intended outcomes.
  • Oversee fire extinguisher certification process and ensure annual inspections are complete.
  • Fill in for public safety dispatch and patrol as needed or scheduled.
  • Coordinate training for the Public Safety Department.
  • Ensure standard operating procedures are maintained, and training is current.
  • Manage public safety vehicles.
  • Ensure scheduled maintenance and day-to-day maintenance needs of all District public safety vehicles and equipment.
  • Make recommendations to Public Safety Manager and Facility Director on new vehicle and equipment needs.
  • Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
  • Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
