In 1951, the Bachelor of Architecture degree program was first accredited by NAAB. Today, the Department of Architecture continues to offer a fully NAAB-accredited program of study leading to the five-year Master of Architecture (M. Arch.). The Department’s focus shapes and fosters design inquiry and technical application in students nationally and internationally, particularly those from the African Diaspora. Located in the heart of the Nation’s Capital, Howard’s Department of Architecture draws heavily on the rich heritage of Washington, D.C. Surrounded by both historic and contemporary built fabric, Howard University provides the ideal setting for exploration and discovery. Students can walk across the campus to view a variety of architectural styles and design philosophies. Many campus buildings were designed by African American architects, some of whom graduated from, or led the architecture program. The College of Engineering and Architecture is one of Howard University’s 14 schools and colleges and is comprised of five academic departments offering accredited undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. The departments include Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering. The Department of Architecture at Howard University, Washington DC is seeking to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic colleague for a full-time, untenured Assistant/ or tenured Associate Professor position in the Master of Architecture Program, set to begin on August 1, 2026.

Requirements

  • A terminal degree in Architecture and or a Ph.D/ABD.
  • expertise and experience in the following areas: history and theory of architecture and/or urban design, design thinking, technology (structures, systems, computation- AI).
  • A strong design portfolio and experience in teaching core courses in history and theory lecture courses, and/or urban design, design thinking, technology (structures, systems, computation, AI) as well as architectural design studios, are essential.
  • Candidates for an assistant professor position must show potential for producing scholarship through peer-reviewed publications, exhibitions, or symposia with national or international recognition.
  • Candidates for tenured Associate Professor must have a record of scholarship through peer-reviewed publications, exhibitions, or symposia with national or international recognition.

  • Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate cross-disciplinary approaches that integrate across art, architecture, and engineering.

Responsibilities

  • teaching undergraduate/ graduate-level lecture and seminar courses corresponding to their area of focus, along with architectural design studios.
  • producing scholarship through peer-reviewed publications, exhibitions, or symposia with national or international recognition.
  • Faculty are expected to carry a load of 15 credits in an academic year, in addition to research and service requirements.
  • provide collegial leadership in a team-based environment
  • participate in strategic planning for the program
  • advise students
  • assist with NAAB Accreditation
  • collaborate with community organizations and partners.
  • help prepare students to respond to the complex cultural, social, technological, and environmental challenges of our contemporary era.
