About The Position

The Swalm School of Chemical Engineering at Mississippi State University (MSU) invites applications for a tenure-system faculty position under the supervision of the Director of the Swalm School of Chemical Engineering. This position will serve as a professional faculty member and specific activities include teaching, research, service, and advising students in the Chemical Engineering program. The Dave C. Swalm School of Chemical Engineering is one of the eight academic departments in the Bagley College of Engineering, housing both the Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering degree programs. The school offers ABET-accredited bachelor's programs in Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering, a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering (available both on-campus and distance), and a doctoral degree in Engineering with a concentration in Chemical Engineering (available both on-campus and distance). The two programs combined have an average enrollment of more than 300 undergraduate and graduate students, with 13 faculty members currently supporting the school. Faculty members have developed a strong research program in the areas of Molecular Modeling, Optoelectronics, Soft Materials, Polymers, Catalysis, Fuel Cells, Crystallization, Carbon Capture and Sequestration, and Subsurface Carbon Storage. Faculty in the school are active in many university research centers, including the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS), the Advanced Composite Institute (ACI), and the High Performance Computing Collaboratory (HPC2), among others.

Requirements

  • Candidates must hold a BS in Chemical Engineering and PhD in Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, at the time of appointment, with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2027.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to develop a sustainable, externally funded, and internationally recognized research program, contribute significantly to their discipline through scholarly work, demonstrate effective teaching and mentorship of both undergraduate and graduate students, and participate in institutional and professional service.
  • Other qualifications include strong leadership and interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication abilities, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative research environment.
  • Successful candidates are also expected to elevate the reputation of MSU through their professional activities.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the School of Chemical Engineering.
  • Responsible for establishing an externally funded research program.
  • Serve as an academic advisor to graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Supervise research of graduate students.
  • Write and submit proposals to prospective sponsors.
  • Engage in scholarly activities resulting in journal and conference papers.
  • Participate in cross-functional research initiative that require coordination and collaboration among research groups, departments, and research centers.
  • Serve as an active member of the technical community and participate in the activities of professional and/or technical societies.
  • Pursue scholarly and professional activities that will keep him/her at the leading edge in their field.
  • Provide leadership and service for school, college, and university.
